I think it has to do with THE FORCE.

I think it was more like, "Holy hell, I can do something other than type those stupid numbers! ...HOLY HELL WE HAVE COMMUNICATION! Um, better be careful. It could be our way out of here, or it could be the Others..."

About the force thing, though? Seriously. My guess is that the Others are trying to create a Utopian society. Notice that they take the strong and the young, and the specifically sought out Walt, who seemed to have some sort of power (polar bears, dead birds?), and Aaron, who a psychic had mentioned to Claire would be in dire need of her care and her care alone, indicating some sort of greatness, even if not good greatness -- another power, perhaps. And remember how Goodwin had put it all? I can't remember exactly what he said, but it sounded like the rationalization of ( ... )
