That's an interesting thesis you're writing!

I don't follow the activities of other Japanese artists, but I know that GACKT founded an organisation (or whatever to call it) named "Show your heart" and with his now ex-band Yellow Fried Chickenz he made a song "Mata koko de aimasho" to which the video centeres around the aftermath of the disaster. I found it on Youtube, including an English translation in the video description:

As for Arashi, they held radio programs in the affected areas for about a year. I guess that's the best way to see what songs the people wanted to hear, what songs helped them during the hard times. You can find the translations here on LJ.
About MarchingJ I don't know much, just that the Jimusho held some kind of charity event every month for a year. As far as I know they didn't sing, though.

I hope I could help you a little. ^^ Good luck with your thesis!

Hi, I was living in Japan at the time of the earthquake and went to Marching J. If you have any questions about the event or other things, I'm happy to help out.

I don't know much about other artists but do know AKB and some others did a event quite soon after the quake.

So are you mainly focusing on how the songs that the artists have performed helped victims? Because they have done more than just concerts and events.

In particular, you should probably focus on the 24 Hour TV charity event from last year when Kanjani 8 were the main personality. They did a lot to help the people in Tohoku.

Also, about Marching J, I went to all three days. There were many news segments about it that you can still find on youtube and whatnot. It was mentioned on Tokyohive several times, so if you search for "marching J", you'll be able to get some English info on it.

If you need lyric translations for Arashi songs, you can find them at my LJ. If you need other ones, I might be okay with helping out too.

Hope that helps!

Unfortunately, the big topic of what japanese personalities did for the Tohoku area is too big. My professor asked me to concentrate on just one aspect and I choose music (my friend wanted to do a thesis on how emotions are represented in mangas but she has to focus on just one emotion) → it is a thesis for a first level degree, that's why it can't be too big: it's not worth the trouble
I'll search on tokyohive of MarchingJ infos ^^ thanks a lot!!

I see. That might make it easier to write a paper though.

Good luck!

And since lj tells me my comment was marked as spam because of the link you asked us to provide, here is the comment again:

My favourite band Garnet Crow released "Smiley Nation". I don't know about any events, but they have a website, just google them.
(Btw, your comment box is VERY hard to read.)

Hello =) Like you, I don't really follow many artists as closely as I do with Arashi, but I do know that EXILE released "Rising Sun" to help raise money for the earthquake victims. It's quite an uplifting song and PV (which got me into them, in fact). There's a good amount of nationalism too.

The actual PV: http://www.nhaccuatui.com//mv/rising-sun-exile.HcFPMnBQHhXv.html
Lyrics (Japanese/English): http://www.jpopasia.com/group/exile/videos/rising-sun::15492.html

I totally think Arashi's performance of "Furusato" in Kouhaku last year is worthy of mention. The lyrics completely took on a new meaning and feeling when Arashi sang it the year of the earthquake (with the pictures in the background).

On a side note, I totally think it's cool that you're writing a thesis on all this! I would love to write a thesis on j-pop/Arashi XD
