Brandon stood outside the door to the hospital wing, nervously checking over the items in his hands. Candy? Check. Nice warm jumper? Check. Flowers? Check. Okay, he was ready.
He hadn't been allowed to see Esme for the last few days because, after he kept turning up and asking how Esme was incessantly, he'd been not-so-kindly asked to leave the hospital wing and not come back unless it was because of his own failing health. He had been able to talk the nurse into letting him pick Esme up on her last day, however, so he couldn't hold it against her too much.
The candy was because he was sure that, after hospital food, Esme would like some sweets. The jumper was in case she was cold. And the flowers were because he was a giant girl. Obviously.
Satisfied that he was ready to enter, he pushed open the door and stepped into the wing, face brightening immediately upon the sight of Esme.
"Hi," he said, awkwardly shuffling the items in his hands. "I um...brought you things."
Esme wasn't one to be shy. She cried out in delight as Brandon appeared around the door and flung herself at him happily. Hugging him, she revelled in the smell and feel of him. She'd missed him in her long stay in the Hospital Wing with no company and nothing to distract her and it felt so good to be reunited. She had been amused when the nurse had grumbled to her that he'd been hanging around all the time and that she'd had to ban him, but she had been a bit lonely when she was at her most contagious.
Looking up at him, Esme bounced excitedly on the balls of her feet and grinned. "Oooh, what did you bring me?" She loved presents and this was turing into more and more of an occasion every minute. "I'm so glad to be finally ready to leave!"
Brandon smiled at Esme's enthusiastic greeting. "Nice to see you, too," he said as he opened his arms to show her what he'd brought. "Candy, because hospital wing food?" he pulled a face for emphasis. "And a jumper in case you're cold. And these..." he held up the flowers, "are because...um...well, just because, so I really suppose the reason is because I'm a giant girl who gets his girlfriend flowers 'just because.'"
He held out the gifts to her, and glanced around the room. "Are you all packed up and ready to go? Is there anything you need me to carry for you?" He didn't add And are you sure you're feeling better? because he didn't want to seem like that much of a worry wart.
Esme chuckled. Popping a piece of the candy into her mouth, she pulled a face as he mentioned hospital food, but inside her happiness just rose that she was going to be able to eat in the Great Hall again. "You're not a big girl," she placated, her words a little muffled due to the sweet in her mouth, "you're just cute and there's nothing wrong with that! The flowers are lovely."
"All packed?!" she questioned with a laugh. "I've been packed up for two days now, waiting for my chance to escape!" She didn't have much stuff with her - it wasn't like she'd been on holiday or anything, and she easily hefted the small, untidily packed bundle under her arm. "Let us depart, handsome rescuer!" Striking a pose, she led the way out into the corridors. She was free!
