In your own words, what do you believe to be some of the strengths and weaknesses (areas for growth) of each house?

Slytherin: This house seems to have the worst reputation in the book because of people like the Malfoys and Voldemort. However, ambition is not necessarily a bad thing. Some people value their goals more than anything else. To have such a strong drive and determination is something that I find very commendable and a quality I truly respect. The willingness to fight for what one wants is definitely a strength. However, this can also be a weakness. Blind ambition or ambition just let loose without any sort of balance can be dangerous. This is something that each person has to decide for themself, but the temptation to take what one wants at any cost is very alive in this environment where striving to attain one's goals reign supreme. The possibility for one to lose control and submit solely to their ambition is a weakness this house has to face and come to grips with. That not everyone turns out to be like that is another one of this house's strengths.

Gryffindor: Courage and bravery are very noble qualities. The ( ... )

Ravenclaw: This house values knowledge and wit above all else. To seek to make oneself more intelligent and knowledgeable is a great quality to have. Knowledge truly is power and allows one to have a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through knowledge one can gain understanding of other cultures, ideas, it can help one solve problems, and learn from other people's mistakes, like Aristotle said in his theory of cathartic experiences through drama. However, one could have all of the knowledge in the world and be able to utilize it effectively. What is the use of understanding human nature or being able to solve a problem if that is all you seek? One must be willing to use this knowledge to help assist the world rahter than solely for the selfish purpose of knowing it just to know it. This can also lead to self-righteousness in the sense that one feels that they have attained knowledge and are thus greater than others. Wit is a powerful thing, but if one takes it to far, they can run the risk of hurting others that ( ... )

Pick a character from each house and tell why you would not get along with them. Describe how this would be a direct reflection of some of your stronger character traits.

Slytherin House: Draco Malfoy. I hate Draco, but for reasons beyond him being the spoiled, stereotypical bad guy. First of all, Draco hides behind his father. Although Lucius is not one of my favorite characters, he is very straightforward about who he is and that is respectable. He admits his faults and faces his consequences, as he did with Voldemort whenever they were all called back. Draco is weak and cannot stand up for himself or take responsibility for his own actions. He is a bully and his pushing his weight around drives me insane. Lastly, although in HBP he bit off more than he could chew, I could not believe that he cried to Moaning Myrtle. Surely he could have found someone better to talk to. First of all, be a man and accept responsibility for what you want to do! I have no toleration for people who try to hide behind others and blame others for their problems. I am anal retentive about taking full responsibility for everything that I do and accepting the consequences. I also want to make my own life; not ( ... )

what do you hope to gain from your experience here at HiH?

I have already gained a lot here at HiH. I have made some great friends, had a chance to work on my writing, and had fun competing in things like the TriWizard Tournament. I enjoy to talk about theories and debate issues. I like to get other people's ideas and input. It has been so much fun getting to know people that share a passion for something as much as, and sometimes more than, I do. However there is something missing, something more that this community has to offer: a sense of community, family, and camaraderie. I want to be proud to participate and earn my house points. I want to fight to earn every point I can and support my house, but I just don't feel that where I am right now. It isn't fun anymore, now it has become like work, and I don't think that is how this community was intended to be. It should be fun to participate in activities, not something that one feels guilty about. And the excitement and the exuberance other people show make me feel mediocre because I don't have that passion for this house. I don ( ... )
