Ye Olde English Sayings agrees with a lot of what's written here (like in saved by the bell or threshold), but other sources disagree:

Wedding Flowers
Before the use of flowers in the bridal bouquet, women carried aromatic bunches of garlic, herbs, and grains to drive evil spirits away as they walked down the aisle. Over time, these were replaced with flowers, symbolizing fertility and everlasting love. Specific flowers have special meanings in many cultures. In Hawaii, the bride and groom wear leis; newlyweds in India don floral headdresses.

In here they repeat both the "warding-off spirits" notion, and the "smelly guests" idea.

Couldn't find "throw the baby out..." anywhere else besides "Ye Olde Sayings", but OED doesn't quote anything earlier then 1909, and says it comes from the German, so the Irish ( ... )
