Eliminating malaria isn't as easy as you think. The old-fashioned, quite effective method is to drain swamps. Alas, that destroys more that the mosquito's habitat. The next method is to somehow eliminate just the mosquito, but that, too, has ecological consequences: so many creatures depend upon them for food (birds and frogs and dragonflies and the aptly named mosquito hawk...). The real trick is to somehow cure the mosquito of the parasite that causes the disease; a cure that can be dumped into the local swamp without destroying all the other amoebas and bacteria living in the water. Obviously, we haven't found that yet.

Alas, many African governments are too busy defending their borders to guard the health of their people. Yes, I know how ironic that is.

I never said eliminating malaria is easy -- I said it's a question of how much money one is willing to spend on it. I also say that doing so is in the interest of all nations (well, most anyway). They can drain the swamps that are near settlements, they can see that a vaccine is made, or at least people have free (or almost free) access to anti malaria pills, and some mosquito nets.
