I'm glad you posted this. It sums up my thoughts better than anything else. Terrorism is not the same thing as Islam, in the same way that the KKK does not represent most white people.

I understand that 9/11 is a tragic memory for lots of people, but American-Muslims lost people in 9/11, too-- no one has a monopoly on grief. And it's not an excuse to take away other citizens' rights.

It wasn't so long ago that our countries interred Japanese-Americans/Canadians after Pearl Harbor, either. I think we may learn from history as the presenter pointed out.

Exactly.

The thing is, you can't even see this building from ground zero. It's at least 2 or more blocks away. It isn't going to be painted to look like a mosque or anything. It's just going to be a community center. I really don't see how it can impose upon anyone's right to mourn, in fact they might even help out in the long run because it's a COMMUNITY.CENTER.

The presenter pointed out a lot of good points, that I think most intelligent people, or people with the capability to put 2 and 2 together to make 4 would understand and get behind if they stopped turning everything into us vs them, me vs you, and emotions/screaming vs dialog/reason.

I think the outrage is being healthily (and maybe deliberately) fuelled by some pretty twisted media reports that are representing this community centre as some kind of giant eastern-styled mosque right on top of ground zero. hey, whatever gets a reaction, right? people need to do their own research.

I agree with what you said. I know I don't pay attention to the media so I do miss a good deal of important things, but I also seem to preserve my brain cells this way.

It's funny because I was planning to make a post about this in my own LJ. XD

But yeah, I hate this attitude of "all Muslims = terrorists". The terrorists in 9/11 were Muslim, yes, but they were radical extremists. EVERY religion has radical extremists, but the extremists don't represent everybody else.

This IS America and WE should not be DENYING people their RIGHTS.

Trufax! Unfortunately people seem to forget this, as is evidenced by the fiasco that is Prop 8. D=

the whole government, from state to federal, in general is a giant fiasco because a good deal of people in positions of power forget they serve the people and not their own needs, and that we have a constitution based upon ideals that do not serve the interests of conservatives or liberals, but the nation as a whole. And a good deal of the people don't want to take responsibility for their thoughts or actions so they go along with whatever is popular or their representative says is a good idea. People aren't thinking and are letting their rights be taken away. And the second anyone goes against the norm, their is a huge hullabaloo about it.

Beautifully put.

Why thank you. It pained me a little to say because I LOVE this country and I am devoted to it but I am so upset with how it has turned out that I can understand why some people just throw their hands up and move to another nation.

But you can't just give up and expect the politicians to fix the problems. The problems are everyone's problems and we all have to work on it, be it protesting, holding town meetings, going to debates, writing to our representatives in congress. The power belongs to us, not them, and if they think it does, then we need to show them who is indeed boss.
