Ballad for Dead Friends and, while it's not necessary to read that first, it's probably better to.
The first time she sees him is at the diner, where she brings him his soup and his bill, but thinks of him as generically unremarkable.
The first time she actually meets him is a week after that.
It’s a cold night and she’s walking home from work, taking her time, staring at her feet as they make their steps on the sidewalk. He pulls up next to her in a noisy truck and it reminds her of her past.
He offers her a ride because it’s not safe out there. She could point out that it’s Forks they’re talking about, population a hundred, but instead she just shakes her head and says I‘ll be fine because she knows that she will be.
Besides, I don’t take rides from strangers.
He holds a hand out the window of his car, Harry Potter, it’s nice to meet you.
She ignores his hand but can’t help but answer. Bella… I’m still not riding with you.
She gives him a small smile and continues on her way.
He follows her the whole way home, his truck jerking like he doesn’t know how to stop it, but she can’t help but give him a small wave when she makes it to her door safely.
