In the origional icon, I also played with the color balance. I forgot to add it in the tutorial, and I didn't remember until it was too late. The Color Balance adjustment layer gives the icon the purlple-y color.
I moved the sliders to the Cyan and the Blue side, and moved the middle slider somewhat to the Majenta side. On most of my recent icons I use a Brightness/Contrast, Color Balance, and Hue/Saturation (to make the icon a bit more colorful) adjustment layers.
