I think the only canon detail is that "early in their career at Hogwarts" they were "in trouble, as usual, and grabbed it from Filch's office" - I just decided to make it super early. XD

I figure Bill as the kind of cool older brother who'd tell his mischievous younger siblings how to get to the kitchens.
