I have always had a soft spot for Filch since finding out he was a Squib. Once I find out why someone is a douchebag I can no longer see them as that much of a douchebag...:/

I'm so glad you wrote this. It's really got me thinking about Filch in a new way. Now I'm imagining that the Kwikspell papers Harry sees are Filch's way of still trying to make his mother proud. Also, as I was looking up how to spell Kwikspell (heh), I saw that JRK stated that Filch is the only member of the Hogwarts staff to stay in the castle during summer break. Imagine being stone dead, magically speaking, stuck alone with the ghosts, Peeves, and portraits, in the most magical place for hundreds of miles. No wonder he's so cranky.

IKR! Poor Filch. I always imagined him seeing Umbridge as a mother figure and that she probably told him how important he was going to be and how much all his work meant. I just never saw him as being innately evil, just having gone through a lot of hardships and trials.
