The first one kills. It's short, evocative, and exceedingly in-character.

The second one killed up until "a different man would have reached out to the boy," which was redundant almost to the point of anvilicious: the previous events had made that point crystal and beautifully clear. ^^

Thank you very much! I'm really grateful that you brought the second point up. I wrote and then deleted the paragraph about five times before keeping it and now that I think about it again (after distancing myself from the fic) I think you're definitely right. :)
