It's widely known that the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry each created the personal area where their students' common rooms would be. They all knew that once they began teaching, if they were going to divide the students into four houses that each separate house would need a place to call their own. When students were sorted, the four wanted them to come to think of their fellow house mates as family, and the best place for making friends and becoming a family is a central room for all to relax and have fun in.
All four also knew exactly what they personally wanted to focus on and how they wanted it to look when finished. Each common room would reflect its founder so that hundreds of years down the road (or at least they all hoped the school would be around that long) any new student could get a idea of what their house was about, just like all the ones that came before them. However, what's not really well known is that each one of them had help from one the others.
All the founders knew that Helga would choose to have her common room close to the kitchens. Cooking was a passion of hers and she wanted to always be in the thick of things at meal times. However, as open and inviting as Helga was she was also very protective of her students, and this was never more evident than in the Hufflepuff area of the castle. The common room where the Puff students spend their time is the most secure of all four and this Helga achieved with a little help from Salazar Slytherin. Salazar definitely had a head for both offensive and defensive spells, so when Helga went to him for aide, he readily complied. They worked on different spells and ways to get in and out of her common room, and in the end, it took their combined skill to achieve the right rhythm needed to get in but truth be told it was Salazar's idea for interlopers to be doused with vinegar.
When Rowena Ravenclaw chose to put her students up on the tower, no one was surprised least of all Godric Gryffindor. Godric and Rowena were friends from a young age and Godric knew of the complete fascination she had of eagles and flying. The two had many conversations about how much Rowena admired the majestic animals and her love of all things high. Rowena always felt she could learn more by observing, and what better way to observe than to be over top of everything? Something not well known is that Godric helped Rowena with the spell guarding her door. Godric was not thought of as being overly smart, and that was exactly how he liked it; he used that to his advantage many a time. So when Rowena asked him to help her with the spell for riddles, he was more than happy to help. Both Rowena and Godric had a love of riddles and their combined enchantment of the eagle knocker ensured a constant changing of the entry question and answer.
Salazar Slytherin chose the basement as the place for his students, and when he was creating his plans, he got a little help from Rowena Ravenclaw. The friendship of Rowena and Salazar was tenuous at best. The two had such strong personalities they almost always clashed when making decisions about the school, but the respect that had for each was deep seated and never wavered. When Salazar was working on his plans, he wanted another way into and out of his common room, but he didn't want it widely publicized so he enlisted the help of Rowena as she was the one who created the ever changing floor plans for the castle. With Rowena's help and then silence on the matter, Salazar was able to create a second entry, and thereby, his perfect dungeon common room.
The Gryffindor common room is the one most easily found. When Godric was putting his thoughts down on parchment he got a little help from Helga. When Godric was growing up, he was always out on adventure after adventure so truly he spent very little time in his own room. So, he was a little lost when trying to figure out how to decorate his students' room. Helga was more than happy to help, and when she was finished, the Gryffindor common room was inviting and homey. Godric himself would sit by the huge fireplace on one of the huge couches and just look around at all the tapestries she made and the pictures she hung, and he could just envision the students coming years and years later doing the same thing.
When the school finally opened and the first students were sorted all the founders followed their charges to the common rooms to gauge their response to the rooms. The Gryffindor students all gathered together onto the couches and laughed and began to learn about each other. The Hufflepuff students quickly learned the way into their place and each one thanked Helga for making them feel so safe. The Ravenclaw students kept going in and out of their common room just to answer more riddles. The Slytherin students explored all areas of their common room and some were luckier in this than others. All in all, the outcome of the Hogwarts common rooms were a great success, and students for thousands of years would reap the benefits of all the hard work put into them.
