Be a Godfather? A Godfather? As in a guardian? Responsible for the life of someone else? Responsible for the health and safety of an innocent child? James and Lilly absolutely must be high. That has to be the only reasonable answer for their request. I can barely take care of myself for Merlin's sake!
If it wasn't for Lily's cooking at least four times a week I'd probably starve to death. And I've only just gotten the hang of laundry washing charms. Just take a look in my closet, you'll see almost half my wardrobe is either accidentally dyed pink, or has giant burn holes in it... What if I mistakenly blew up little Harry, while trying to change his diaper? Then what?
That's the exact same question I ask my best friend and his wife in response to their request. I even add in a “Have you been hitting the Fire Whiskey a bit too hard tonight,” James laughs, but Lily doesn't look too amused. In fact she looks a little pissed, maybe even a bit hurt. It's the hurt that I'm the most concerned about. Yes the pretty ginger can be a very dangerous enemy when she's scorned, but I'm not afraid of aggravating her as a talented witch. What I don't want to do is upset her as my friend.
So with a sigh I give in and extend my arms to the woman, as she places her small child into them. I cradle Harry awkwardly, in my inexperienced grasp, but I hold him as if he is the most important person in the world. As if the fate of all the world rests behind his tiny green eyes, as he shifts and yawns in my embrace, “I'll do it,” I say still not sure I'm the best choice or the most responsible option, but in that instant I know I love this baby as if he were my own son, “We're going to have quite the story together, Harry,” I tell the infant and he coos, kicking a little before drifting back to sleep once more.
