Remus made his way through the store quietly. He thought about what this Christmas meant to him and how he wanted to make sure his friends knew just how much he appreciated them and all they had done for him. When he had started Hogwarts he was sure he would have no friends; he knew it was only his mother's insistence and Dumbledore's generosity and cunning that allowed him to attend the school at all. Those first few days had been horrible. He was small for his age and his clothes were threadbare, his uniform a couple of sizes too big so that his mother wouldn't have to replace them too quickly. The other kids had teased him relentlessly until James had come along and taken him under his wing. Along with James came his friend Sirius of course, and then they adopted another stray; Peter. Those three boys had become his family, they took care of him and when they learned of his curse they took it in stride, dedicating themselves to learning Animagus magic in order to be with him even when he was transformed.
He was currently browsing Scrivenshafts, looking for a gift for James. He knew that James was thoughtful and kind, quick to the defence of a friend, but he could be loud and brash at times. James was his first friend, the one to stick up for the underdog and he would never forget it. Despite his flaws his innate goodness shined through. Remus thought that he might like something that would help him with Lily since she seemed to be the only thing on his mind anymore. Unfortunately it had seemed to cause problems as well, since James' insistence on getting her attention caused him to become a bit of a bully to Severus Snape. It made Remus sad to see his friend act so ugly when he knew he had a wonderful heart. His jealousy had led to some ugly pranks. When Sirius lead the way it really got out of hand. He knew that James had tried to stop the werewolf incident before it began, he never would have done anything like that without Sirius' questionable influence.
He came across a beautiful set of hand tooled leather. The owners of each would be able to see what the other had written, therefore if used properly they could share their deepest thoughts and desires without the embarrassment of face to face. Picking them up he took them to the counter to pay and moved on to the next shop on his list.
He thought hard about Sirius as he walked into Zonko's joke shop. The black haired teen was loud and arrogant in all the worst ways, even though he was loyal to his own friends. To an outsider he was definitely a ladies' man, even though it was obvious to his friends that his eyes were really on the boys. Well, at least it was obvious to his friends. In fact Remus had a sneaking suspicion that Sirius was being a bit more than friendly to him in particular. He didn't really know how to feel about it, it wasn't that he was straight, but he was a quieter, more reserved person and Sirius was so much his opposite he didn't know if he could handle the attention that being with him would bring. Remus really preferred to hide in his friends' shadows, living his life with a quiet dignity that belied his strength with all of his challenges. As he browsed the aisles of the shop he ran his hands over some of the tamer creations for sale. He thought about Sirius' relationship with his family and the fact that he wouldn't be going home to them ever again. He felt bad that he had lost his parents, but at the same time he didn't know how he would have ever been able to cope with the same situation. Picking up an item from a nearby shelf an idea came into his head. Gigi's sparkling makeover kit was guaranteed to make even the dingiest house sparkling clean and all the gloom would be replaced by smiles and cheer. Remus chuckled to himself at the image of portrait frames filled with laughing clowns and the horrid mounted house elf heads being turned into fluffy poodles or something equally cute. With his purchase in hand, he knew that Sirius would love the gift. He’d find a way to charm it to explode upon arrival in the Most Ancient and Noble House of Black.
As he walked into Honeyduke's to pick out the perfect gift for the last of his group he thought about the reasons Peter was with them. Peter was a round boy, rather short and mousy, much like his Animagus form. Remus was fond of him; Peter was quiet like him and for the most part went about his life unnoticed. Remus noticed him though. The only thing that troubled him was that it seemed that Peter didn't seem to accept his place in their group. It felt like he was always trying to catch up, to fit in. It was like no matter how hard they tried to show him that he was loved and cared for and that he was accepted into their group, he couldn't believe it. Remus got the feeling from him that he was just pretending at being part of their pack. Remus wished that wasn't the case, he wished he could show the other boy just how much he was appreciated and cared for; he just didn't know how to do it. It worried him though that if things didn't change Peter might do something rash to try and gain some feeling of belonging. Remus hoped it would never come to that. The fact was Remus cared about Peter very much and he was planning on letting him know just how much this Christmas. He counted the Galleons in his pouch and smiled as he realized that he had enough to buy a large assortment of Honeyduke's finest chocolates. He hoped that Peter would like his gift, and that maybe they could move their friendship just a little bit closer.
As he walked back down the road to meet his friends at the Three Broomsticks, Remus smiled as he reminisced on what good friends he had and how lucky he truly was.
