Author’s Note: So, this is the fourth (and final) in a series of one-shots. This can be read on its own, but here are
Summer,
Autumn, and
Winter. A very big thanks to
lemondrop34, who dragged me kicking and screaming through this one, lol. Jane is the best, and I couldn't have done this without her. This has been cross-posted, so I'm sorry if you've already seen it. I hope you enjoy it :)
It’s the bright sunlight streaming in through the window that finally wakes him up, although he really didn’t get much sleep the night before.
It’s one of those days where he really doesn’t want to get out of bed. He wants to pull the covers up over his head, and wake up again on Monday.
The only thing worth waking up for on a day like today is Ginny, he thinks. It’s been months since he’s seen her. He’s been busy with the final stages of Auror training, and she’s been busy with Quidditch matches, tryouts with the Harpies, and studying for her N.E.W.T.’s.
School is ending for her soon, and he can’t help but think of that day as the beginning of the next point in his life.
And he knows that he wouldn’t be able to make it through today without her.
He drags himself through his flat to get ready, and sips his tea as he looks out his kitchen window. He can see what a beautiful day it is outside, and he thinks of the weather as mocking. He has a hard time believing that today of all days would call for nice weather.
He’s delayed the inevitable long enough, and Apparates to Hogwarts.
He can see people everywhere as he makes his way through the gates. He pats his hair down over his scar in an attempt to go unnoticed as he makes his way across the grounds, but knows that it’s useless. Today, everyone will recognize Harry Potter.
He sees old classmates, members of the ministry, and friends. He has a hard time looking anyone in the eyes, afraid that his emotions will get the best of him.
He finally sees a group of people, most of whom have shocking red hair. It’s the first time he’s felt a little peace all day. He makes his way over, and it takes no more than a few seconds for Mrs. Weasley to pull him into a tight hug, which he accepts eagerly. He gets a pat on the shoulder from Mr. Weasley and handshakes and hugs from the rest of the Weasley family. Except for Ginny.
He looks around for her, assuming she hasn’t left the castle yet. He sees the doors open, and watches her come out. She gets more beautiful each time he sees her, he thinks.
Her eyes span the grounds, looking for him. She doesn’t think she can stand in this crowd of people without him.
They both see each other, and she walks right over to him and into his embrace. They hold each other tightly for what feels like hours, but what are probably only a few moments. He pulls away and holds her at arm's length, and can see that her eyes are filled with tears. He knows she’s trying her hardest to not let them fall, and he leans in to kiss her cheek, hoping it will help.
She gives him a small smile, and moves to rest her head on his shoulder. He keeps his arm wrapped around her, gently rubbing his hand in soothing circles.
He knows her mind is on Fred, and that she’s probably barely holding it together.
He, too, is struggling with his emotions, and it’s only the feel of Ginny in his arms keeping him from falling apart.
The ceremony begins, and Harry holds her all through it. The names of all those lost a year ago are read off, and Harry can feel his heart breaking with each name.
It doesn’t last long, and his mind is racing. He can’t believe it’s already been a year, that all of those people are gone from his life. It would be easy for him to just run away and start over, leave his grief behind. But he knows that’s not an option; that it’s something he would never do. And he knows the only way he can find peace is sitting next to him, her small hand clasped tightly with his.
The crowd breaks apart, some breaking off into personal conversations, some leaving the grounds all together.
He sees the rest of the Weasleys. Mr. Weasley is holding his wife, and he can see that George is barely keeping it together. He wishes there was something he could do to help, but he knows that they have each other, and that in time they’ll be okay. He promises himself that he’ll visit the Burrow soon. Being with each other, as a family, is something they all need right now.
He looks at Ginny. She holds her head high, trying to look brave in front of the crowd.
He gently pulls on her hand, leading her away from everyone. She squeezes his hand, and follows.
They walk to the lake, where no one is around. It’s quiet; the only sounds are birds chirping and the soft rustle of trees moving in the breeze.
He lies down on the grass, and she follows him, moving into his arms.
Her head rests on his shoulder, and her hand makes lazy circles across his chest. His own hand sits gently on her back, holding her close.
They talk. They talk about everything they have gone through for the past year, conversations that were too important for the spare minutes they have spent together.
He thinks back on visiting her in Hogsmeade, and her sneaking into his flat late at night. They are memories he keeps with him to get him through hard missions and boring days in his office.
But it’s this that lets him know they are going to make it; that they are going to last forever.
There’s no one else he could think of being like this with. He can smell her hair as it tickles his cheek. And he allows himself to open up in ways he never has before.
She talks about school, and how difficult it was to spend another year in the castle. She tells him how hard it was to spend another year in there without him.
He squeezes her waist tightly, and makes sure she knows that it was their last year apart.
He can feel tears wetting his shirt, and he wipes a few of his own tears away.
With Ginny lying in his arms, he starts to think about the future. He knows it won’t be too long until she moves in with him, their time apart calling for immediate closeness. He thinks about her playing Quidditch, and how proud he is of her, and how being with her is the perfect way to start the rest of his life.
He glances down at her, and sees her looking up at him, her chin resting on his chest.
She leans up and kisses him. It’s soft, and quick, and perfect, he thinks. She rests her head back down on his shoulder, and he places a kiss on the top of her head, running his fingers through her hair.
They lay together for a few hours, occasionally talking, but mostly thinking.
She has one month left of school, and then their time apart will be over.
And it’s nice, he thinks, to just be together like this. To just hold her in his arms, and not have anywhere else to be. It was an emotional day, and a difficult year, but being here alone with Ginny, he finally feels safe. With her, he feels like he can be himself, like he can finally be just Harry.
He’s ready to have this everyday.
