RaceFail continues unabated. rydra_wong has the details as ever hereI'm working on my dissertation prospectus, which for me means that I'm very immersed in questions of race and how they relate to science fiction, to gender and sexuality, to the future. I feel like adding another half a cent to the race debate may not be that useful to anyone; it's all being ( Read more... )

as a bona fide Celt (well, on the non-Jewish side) I do not think that Celtic mythology provides a get out of jail free card for contemporary racial implications of contemporary writing.
Yes, this. As an Irish-American, I've been disgusted with the use of my ethnic heritage materials to batter other people. Nor was I impressed with the Christy Moore music tags at the ends of disgusting posts.
I look forward to reading your reviews; the first one was great!

In the mythical debate about cultural appopriation that *didn't* devolve into racefail, one very minor tributary I'd like to go down (if I didn't worry about it detracting from the issues of POC that are continually getting trampled over) would be the status of Scottish/Irish fantasy vs the contemporary status of Scotland/Ireland. Yonmei made a great post about Scottish fantasy here.

Yeah. I have to confess I feel guilty for not posting something declaring my abhorrence of the FAIL of RaceFail 09. I guess I haven't because it's just so huge and so...not in my corner of either expertise or fandom participation that I really wouldn't know what to say that wouldn't be redundant. I mean, I was horrified by it, but didn't feel I could meaningfully contribute to the discussion beyond, "OMG this is RIDICULOUS," and there were a million linky posts on my flist already.

Which isn't an excuse. Cus now I'm the person who finally has something to say only because it affects something personal to me. But...I guess I do have something to say. So I'll say it.

As another bona fide Celt (well, on the non-American side; on the where I was raised, culturally and linguistically side), and even as a Celt who feels that there are some intra-UK issues where us Celts get the shaft, throwing Celtic mythology into SF/Fantasy is in no way analogous to dealing with race issues ( ... )

Yes, totally, all of this! Thank you for taking my 'I'm too lazy to actually express this' one-liner and unpacking it into a proper rant.

It was in the comments to rozk's post that I saw a lot of this coming up, including from Charles Stross who is actually in Scotland (I looked him up and I think he's English originally). It just seemed so... lacking in the obvious to me (and went along with some other unsurprising misunderstandings/entitlement issues). Also I, personally, never heard of a kelpie manifesting as a black man anyway.

unrelated to this post, but have you seen this trailer for the new terminator movie yet? it feels like a fusion of scc and bsg to me, thematically.
