This is very interesting and helpful to me! When I'm changing the color of the lineart that I'm using, I usually use selective color on the blacks and neutrals of the lineart and sometimes change it from there with Hue/Saturation too and then erase the parts I don't want or want a different color. However, I like that this method gives you a little more freedom in the color choice. I think I might try this/combine it with other techniques on a few icons. :]
I just tried one, and here's what it looks like...
im usually reluctant to look at anime icon tutorials, but yours caught my eye. afterwards, i checked out your icons and they really outshine all the others that i've seen. i'm not an anime icon fan/maker but i'm thoroughly impressed. keep it up! :D
