!Cheese Festival Discussion: Outside Perception of Helga

Jul 17, 2012 23:05

I'm not creative in any way, but I do think too much lol  so my contribution to the Cheese Festival this week are: random discussion questions!
I'm about to finish a HA! marathon so this is the perfect time for this :D

My first question:

Do you think everyone knew about Helga's feelings for Arnold?

Yay discussion post!!

My perception was that none of the kids were perceptive enough to notice except Phoebe (implied in "Helga Sleepwalks" and "Helga's Love Potion"). And the others only knew when Helga told them (she told Lila and Patty... anybody else?). But you bring up a good point about Gerald! I'll have to watch the Valentine's Day ep again. I'm not sure whether he suspected Helga or just realized that Arnold and Fake Cecile needed time alone to talk.

Do you remember in "Little Pink Book" when Arnold and Gerald were trying to find the author (of the journal of love poems) and they were going through the yearbook and Gerald was like, "Arnold I give up, the next person on this list is Helga Pataki... HAHAHAHA". Crazy as it sounded to him at the time, that may have been a clue for him to figure it out sometime later. :)

Oh, but Grandpa knew, I'm sure. :) I'm not sure when he found out but he seemed to piece it together over the seasons!

(sorry for the repeated edits lol)

Phil and Gertie knew for sure. :)

I'm pretty sure Mr. Simmons knew, considering that he let Helga get away with signing all her works as "Anonymous."

I know that Craig Bartlett wanted to make an episode where Helga's "secret" about liking Arnold somehow came out into the open. This would've happened when Arnold was away for some undetermined reason and Craig's intent was that everyone would've been all "DUH!" and known all along.

Grandpa knows for sure. I think if Helga's parents paid more attention to her, they would know. There's one episode where she falls out of her closet and she's wearing a football shaped thing on her head from her shrine, and her parents see it.

Of the kids, Phoebe, Lila, Patty know. I don't think she told Patty, I think she figured it out for herself. I kind of think Stinky must have some idea, after what happened in that one episode where he pretends to be her boyfriend. Stinky isn't very bright though, so maybe not.

Brainy knows, too! Can't forget about Brainy!

I also think that maybe Coach Wittenberg's wife, Tish, knows. In that one episode where she and Coach Wittenberg are getting remarried, Helga says that she doesn't want to be maid of honor and Tish says something like, "Oh, too bad, because Arnold's gonna be best man and I thought it would be cute to see the two of you walking down the aisle."

Brainy!! Of course Brainy must know. And I think you're right about Patty, I forgot that she'd figured it out herself.

Oh and another bit with Miriam, she also cleared out Helga's entire closet shrine once ("Arnold's Hat" I think). Like she thought Helga (whose room is otherwise always very clean) just had a pile of trash in her closet or something, lol.

Miriam is just so oblivious. It always makes me sad how in that one episode, "The Aptitude Test", Helga asks her parents to put her journals up in the attic and Miriam burns them. Didn't she even wonder what was written in them? I guess, just like with the closet shrine, she just thinks they're trash.

MIRIAM BURNS THEM?? It was probably meant to be funny, but that is depressing, I don't remember that. Aptitude Test is one of those eps I never watch. I'll have to watch it again soon.

I always figured Gerald was trying to give Arnold a chance with this girl who obviously went out of her way to snag him for a date, so I kinda doubt Gerald knows about Helga's affections--as it is, he still doubts she has redeemable qualities.

Phoebe, Lila, Patty, Brainy and the grandparents, however, clearly know. The boys are all rather clueless in their class, aren't they? Hahahaha~

Edited to add: Mr. Simmons seems to have an inkling, as he's always been quite sensitive enough to keep Helga's poems anonymous while reading them aloud--he wanted to show off her intellectual strengths without making her own up to it. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that he knows where Helga's affections lie, and why she keeps her true intentions hidden away.

I suspect Big Bob may also know about it, at least after the movie.

I think Gerald is just looking out for his man. He hates Helga, I don't think he'd do her a favor - especially one that he might not think Arnold would appreciate.

Lila knows, of course, and Dr. Bliss. Phoebe and Patty have figured it out, and Brainy must have. I really don't think any of the other kids would've, though - we as the audience pay a lot of attention to Helga and Arnold's dynamic, but why would anyone else in the class? Helga picks on everyone.

Grandpa definitely knows. Grandma might - it depends on how lucid she is at any given moment. Mr. Simmons knows. I doubt any of the other Patakis pay enough attention to Helga to notice.

And Arnold knows, of course! Stupid movie. (I was not pleased by that development, personally.)
