Relevance: One of Rookwood's worst memories. Rookwood spent fourteen years in Azkaban between 1982 and 1996. After his escape he spent just five months outside Azkaban before being recaptured and sent back.

Gus has been in the holding cell for hours now. He doesn't know where it is, or even what time it is, because there are no windows and he doesn't have his wand, but he guesses it must be dark by now. All he knows is that he won't be there long, because they will take him back to Azkaban, probably in the morning, when all the paperwork is sorted.

He isn't thinking about that though; instead he's pacing the length of the tiny room and trying, methodically and as calmly as he can, to find a way out of it. He's been doing this for hours. He knows it's impossible, but he tries anyway. He's sweating, and somewhat out of breath, and he licks his bottom lip nervously every now and again.

It's dark outside, when Gideon finally steps through the door and into the cell Augustus is being held in. It's taken him some time to realise what has happened and sort it all out.

*leans against the door, which has become solid again, and watches Augustus, taking in his appearance and even seeing the light sheen of sweat on his neck* *can see that he's trying to think his way out of this, but that there's absolutely no way*

*after a little while, in a very quiet whisper* Gus.

*eyebrows draw together a fraction more, and his breath hitches and grows more rapid for a moment* *rubs his palm over his forehead and shuts his eyes briefly*

*looks as if he might answer for a moment, but then only makes a quiet, half-choked noise and shakes his head*

*swallows when he looks up, thinking that he hasn't seen him so utterly lost and desperate before, and for a long moment, he doesn't know what to say* *Augustus' half-choked noise makes him blink once, and his nostrils flare a little*

*still nearly a whisper* Since when have you been in here?

I suppose it would be of very little consolation that I died barely two months after you were sent back to Azkaban. It was suitably grisly for your tastes, I think; slow and painful - befitting a traitor.

You'd have wanted the pleasure yourself, though, I imagine.

I am sorry.

Nit-picky, I know, but I don't think there were any Dementors in Azkaban after they defected to Voldemort in OotP. :O

My tastes are not grisly. You are sorry only that you died.

Yes, I know they defected, but the general consensus is that there were some there for a while still at this point.

At the end of OotP? Hm, well I'm hardly going to quibble about it. I prefer them being there because it's more mean to my characters. :D

I am sorry that everything happened the way it did. There is much to regret. I did what I had to in order to survive. I always did. You presented me with a way out... and so I took it. And left you to rot in my place. It should not have come to such.

Though I admit I might not offer such solemnities were I still alive to run.

Funnily enough, I planned on doing the same to you, if I ever got caught. There was a letter in my desk at work with details of your involvment attesting as much.

Unfortunately, I didn't count on you getting caught so soon yourself.

I know I probably shouldn't, given what he's done. But he's so sure, until the end.
