Less Unemployed!

Yesterday I accepted a development position at Fenway High School, a Pilot School in the Boston Public School System. The school was recently promoted by the Massachusetts Department of Education to a Compass School, meaning it is considered a model for improving other schools around the state. 15/hr at 30 hrs per week is $450 a week, isn't it? Is Boston that expensive, that you couldn't afford a tiny apartment with a couple roommates? I was planning on working in Newark for 15/hr 25 hrs a week, plus maybe waitressing a night or two a week, and I wasn't terribly worried about getting by.

Boston is somewhere in the top three most expensive cities in the country.

Another slight issue is that I don't get paid for holidays or school breaks. There is about two-three months where I am not getting paid and will need to find alternative work accommodations.

But yes, the answer is I would have a lot of trouble affording an apartment and relevant expenses on my own on this pay.

And it's enough work that you wouldn't really have the time/energy to get a second job. Ugh. Still, it seems, if not luxurious, at least ultimately workable - which explains why you decided to accept the job.

I guess I missed the "so, uh... Korea... no" entry, but I'm assuming you're not going?

As much as the money situation sucks, that sounds like a pretty great job doing something you could really love! Congratulations.

That sounds like an amazing job, Peter. Sounds perfect for you. I don't know Boston nearly as well as you do, but I wouldn't put finding an apartment in the impossible category. There are tons of great places for under $600/month.
