Genderbends and Nyotalia

May 28, 2011 07:10

[This post was inspired by the post regarding all of the Seychelles hate and some of the discussion that went on in there about Nyotalia/genderbends of the characters.]

First and foremost, let’s get my opinion on the character genderbends out of the way: I don’t like them. It’s not even a matter of liking some more than others, or the male ( Read more... )

Well, I like Nyotalia. Maybe because I only see them as a new variety in fanart and not as a story on its own.

That's how it goes. I have to go thousands of pages back to find Iceland fanart... well, that's our bad luck.

I agree, it should be okay to not like Nyotalia, just like some people don't like certain pairings (FrUK/USUK pairing war anyone?).

I know Belarus and Hungary are often turned into boys - but on the other hand, Hungary actually has a story before Nyotalia as a boy (when she thought she'd grow a dick and Prussia thought she was a guy etc.). And well, Belarus' man-self looks quite badass.

In my opinion, there is still more canon fanwork than nyotalia fanwork. And that's okay. To each their own.

Shortened:

I don't get why Nyotalia kicks such a fuss. Guys. Respect those who don't like it as OP does.
But on the other hand, I don't understand why some people make such a fuss about it. Sorry.

Oh wow. Just... Wow. You can't be serious.

They're a handful of sketches. Himamuya was just throwing around ideas on his blog, exactly the same as the Japanese Prefecture characters. It wasn't some vast conspiracy to take away your precious slash.

And so what if the fandom plays with the Nyotelia characters? How does this, in any way, piss on your yaoi parade? People would have genderbent the cast anyway, even without his designs. You know why? Because people are allowed to do whatever the hell they want.

Himamura won't stop doing the comic because he heard somewhere that someone in America was shipping France with a toaster, and that the fan decided that that since the toaster has slots, it's a female, and because he obviously made it a 100% no exceptions gay comic, it's insulting his work and he and ends up living the rest of his life in weeping solitude.

My god, get over yourself.

Oh lol, you assume I'm a het fan. I'm not a het fan, but I'm not a yaoi fan either. Or a yuri fan. Gender, frankly, means nothing to me.

You're condemning Nyotalia because you're claiming it's "straight-washing" the fandom. Which you clearly state as a attempt to cover over anything gay to appeal to the straight masses. Which is implying there was never any het/yuri fic or art to before the fandom got big. Which is laughably wrong.

You're presenting the issue that the series itself, manga and tv series, is changing to appeal to a wider audience. It isn't. It's still pretty gay. And the fandom is fandom. Every possible paring can and will be explored, and there's nothing you can do about it.

So... you're entire argument is moot.

I admit I skimmed through that wank and only read the final paragraph. First, I'd like to thank you for maintaining a non-fucktarded demeanor despite the fandom's rapid degradation. I love hetalia_wank because the last remaining fans that are not developmentally delayed tend to gravitate towards these discussions. That in itself is harsh, unrelated wank and I apologize.

Second, I agree wholeheartedly when you say that, to many in this fandom, disliking (a) female character(s) = misogyny. Very untrue. If you respect the sexes at all, it would be understood that there are differences between the male and female brain. Disliking extremely exaggerated biological characteristics of fictional female characters is wrong? Gee, I'm a big fucking misogynist!

All in all, it comes down to the fact that this is a touchy fandom. Racism, sexism, and insensitive remarks in general are not tolerated. I wish they were at times, because the constant "YOU CAN'T SAY THIS" and "YOU CAN'T SAY THAT" tends to get annoying ( ... )

I pretty much agree with every word of this. Nyotalia is a gimmick to me. It's fun to see the character designs for the genderbends, and after that, I just don't care. I like the England we have, not the apparently different but no one even really knows England in the alternate universe-are there even strips? I know there are pictures and some notes, but it's not like we see canon personalities and interactions for this other series. I get tired of people saying "Nyotalia is canon!" or "Nyotalia exists in Hetalia!" It's a different series with different characters with different personalities-allegedly, or it would be if we actually saw any of it, which we have not really, so. I get tired by the implication that goes with it, that because I love Hetalia, I have to love Nyotalia-playing a bunch of OCs-as well. I don't. I don't begrudge anyone who does like it, and I have some friends who HAVE done a good job with it, but I just don't care. It's not Hetalia. It's not the same series or characters. I don't have to like it ( ... )

I agree with all this except I really like Nyotalia. This is a late reply but I had to reply.
