Himaruya's characters manage to find a sweet spot in terms of characterization - each one of them is flawed, but in a harmlessly loveable way. Fan OCs are like OCs in most other series, and if they're not ridiculously idealized to the point of not being relatable (case in point: the pink-haired North Korea), then they're too flawed. They're nations, remember, and there are likely citizens from those nations online who want to see their home country being portrayed as likable (unless, again, we're talking about North Korea, which is pretty much not gonna be on livejournal ( ... )

I haven't seen much hate on OCs myself.
I think whenever someone sees an OC, they immediately think 'oh god it's going to be a mary sue' and start hating on them/the artist. I know from previous fandoms I've been in, about 75% of OCs get paired up with a canon character (who becomes OOC) and they have a happy life with lots of babies or whatever. People probably don't want to see a random OC hook up with their favourite Hetalia characters.

It's harder to critique Hetalia characters because they're all loveable in their own way, they may have a not-so likeable personality or looks, but all of them have at least one endearing trait.

I have a Hetalia OC myself (Antarctica) and I have tried to find a lot of information about that country to try and base his personality off of. It's kinda hard because there isn't that much to work from, but at least I don't have that much to screw up. I think that if you are going to create your own OC, research is the key! I don't think anyone likes an un-researched Hetalia OC.

I like my OCs, but I'm not throwing them in everyone's faces.
Maybe it's the fact that Mary-Sue-OCs are more likely to happen because the creators want their characters to fit to the story in all ways.

But still, there are some awesome OCs out there.

Well personally, I don't mind OCs if they aren't a central focus in the story and don't end up hooking up with the canon characters.

Or like, if it's a historically accurate story and Himaruya hasn't created a personification for the country appearing. I mean look at Portugal - Spain probably has loads of history with that country, but Portugal as a character hasn't appeared in Hetalia yet.

There are some alright OCs out there, but more than often they DO irk me because sometimes they're very Mary-Sue. :/

I find much of the characterization of canon characters to be dead wrong, and seeing it so much, I've mostly become desensitized to it. But there's kind of a "Fuck you!" in someone going out of their way to create a personification for your homeland that is either nothing but insulting or shows off the creator knows nothing about your country but is going to go ahead writing about it anyway (looking at you, fans insisting Mexico has to be a guy because "the name ends in o!").

On the topic of your last sentence, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Himaruya made Mexico a girl. Mexico in Japanese is "Mekishiko" and when countries end in -ko in Japanese, they sound female to Himaruya, so he usually makes them girls. Something that sounds female to you might not to a Japanese person. I'm not one of those people who thinks EVERY country that hasn't been revealed yet should be a girl because MOAR TITS, I think male Mexico might be a better idea because it has more comedic potential, but I will expect Mexico to be a woman. It's sad how so many people hate the idea of Mexico being a girl just because of those horrid Belarus-like Mexico OCs.

Just putting in my two cents.
