BBC’s Toughest Place to be a Bus Driver: Manila

Feb 26, 2011 17:55

Hello there guys!

On Tumblr, I found this very interesting video that instantly made me think of how England would react if ever he were told to drive around the crazy streets of Manila.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the life here at our home.
Yes, very interesting to see those people from another side of the world take on something similar to their job - in a nightmarish yet nostalgic way.

Somehow this reminds me of Oprah with the episode where some of the biggest CEOs take on undercover missions as ordinary employees of their own firm, without their worker's knowledge of course.

Hey, thanks for sharing this to everyone. :)

I agree with you on that. The fact that people of the same job can experience it in an entirely different way must be life-changing and eye-opening.

Oh? I'd like to see that episode. What season is it in?

And no need to thank me XD

I can't remember which one, but I got a lesson out of it. Pressing the remote endlessly and luck can work wonders when you're enduring that time alone at home. XD

Sadly, said luck never happens to me OTL

Either way, I'll try looking for it in the Wiki. Thank you for sharing that :3

Yeah dude. It makes me so jelly whenever I see how high-end they are. And then I take a look at our stuff and I just go >.>

And I'm pretty sure the Philippines misses you, one of their own kababayans <3 But at least in Australia, you have better living and better chances at life. You don't see depressing poverty every time you go to school. OTL

NO NO DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS FIRST! XD And YOU CAN DO IT, I'M CHEERING FOR YOU! \o/

No need to thank me X3

You're right on that one. He'd want to say a million and one things, but he'd have enough tact to keep it all in all while musing on how hard it must be for Maria/Juan to live like this.

I highly doubt that. XD

Arthur should really get paid for every mention of James Bond. He'd be even richer than Steve Jobs without the government income.

Daw, I'm pretty sure that isn't all true. I met some lovely Aussie people who are really nice and not obese at all XD But then again, I'll have to take it from you since you actually live there.
Wow, really? They complain that much? I mean I know we're known to be hardworking and all, but then I never really thought that such attitudes would be that evident. It makes me think of Daniel facepalming when his people are like that.

/throws you some energy drinks

HAHAH oh Alfred. If only Arthur passed down the knowledge on how to keep one's mouth shut.

You know, I never notice how small the tricycles really are until I see a foreigner try to actually get into one XD

This is a great post... The show's premise is really interesting. The only jeepney route that I was ever allowed to ride on was the UP IKOT around Diliman. Pops thought it was the "safest" one, because the jeep pretty much goes 'round and 'round the campus. Can't get lost riding that one! And I love how the engines are screaming loud that you can barely hear yourself think while you try to make sure that your butt stays in the seat because there aren't any seat belts, and the driver's most likely going over the speed limit and not staying within the road lanes... Good times!

England might be shocked at Manila's traffic. He might be nervous about driving the jeep on the right side of the road in Manila. He'll certainly be appalled at other drivers' disregard for traffic rules. But I think he'll eventually get over it all. He seems like the type who would gradually get used to the devil-may-care attitude that every ( ... )

IKR. Even though he said he was 6"4, the tricycles are still pretty tiny. OTL

What's even more interesting is how they didn't sugar coat the environment. I expected them to send Josh to a hotel or something but I was really gobsmacked when they sent him to live in the slums. I'm pretty sure it made him think very hard about his life back in London.

Absolutely. (I was wondering how a person who drives on the opposite side could pick up how to drive our way fast) He'd most probably be cursing under his breath the entire time, with mad drivers who turn left and right, disregard the signals and road signs plus their pleasure in hearing the sound of their horns. But you're probably right about him getting used to it, since he is the Great Britain after all. Lord knows what he's going to do once he masters how to drive a jeep. And just imagine the incredulous looks on people's faces when they see a British man driving one! XD

Oh my dear Lord.

Damn, I knew our traffic was bad, but now it's pretty much certified terrible.

What makes it even more disturbing is that I didn't even think that the traffic in this video (first part) was heavy O_O

Aw man, I wonder what would happen if they made him drive around Taft and Vito Cruz. At rush hour.

One word: nightmare.

My mother always told me I was forbidden to learn how to drive, but by God, I told her that if I learned to drive through the streets of Manila, I could drive anywhere in the world.

It's amazing how we don't really see how horrendous one thing is because we're so used to it.

Yeah, the traffic wasn't absolutely jam-packed. Every Filipino knows it's never traffic unless you're in the same spot for more than 5-10 minutes and you're crawling at the rate of 3 mph with horns blaring and red taillights and bright headlights.

Jesus take the wheel, then.

His worst nightmare tenfold.

I'm forbidding myself from driving XD When I'm in the passenger's seat, I'm already having epileptic fits from the traffic. I've got terrible road rage, so I don't think it'd be safe to put me on the road.

Our traffic truly is horrific. I mean, before I came home, our car was nearly crushed between three buses. Three. I don't even know how that's possible, but it happened.

Road rage... What an interesting emotion. XD

REALLY? DEAR PETER, THREE? A-are you alright? Did you get any injuries from it? ;A; Was this during regular smooth traffic or during rush hour?

For all we know, it could be. OTL

No, the traffic was light. As I stated in my earlier reply, it's never traffic traffic unless cars are at a standstill. Dear God, especially if you're at a standstill in EDSA. One would be there for hours and hours to come.

Nah, Arthur wouldn't do that. He'd probably try to tear his eyebrows out, yes, but not completely loose his cool. XD He's been through the Medieval Ages, so I'm pretty sure he can handle our traffic. unless he's had a really bad day and his temper was shorted than usual

And it's okay, I get typos all the time too. I get so tempted to delete the comment and do it all over again, but I just let it be. XD /hands you a handkerchief and pats your back
