I think Iran would still feel a nagging sense that he should be loyal to the regime and would be very torn and tormented about what he's doing, even to the point of lashing out at America. But America understands, wants to help, and doesn't let it drive him away.
Summary: Iran is torn between loving and hating him, between wanting to get close and wanting to pull away.
