HETALIA RAGTIME!

ACT I

Prologue (Hetalia Ragtime!)
(Cast)

CANADA: In the 1940s-Common Era, should say, sorry-in the 1940s, the combination of competitive political ideologies, technological innovations, and collapsing alliances made most of the Northern hemisphere of this planet a really unpleasant place to be. [chuckles, awkwardly] Not that it had been one before that. But the world was changing, and at an unprecedented speed. Or maybe not unprecedented-but unprecedented in the eyes of the Nations who embodied the conflict.

AXIS POWERS: The skies were blue and hazy
Rarely a storm, barely a chill (la la la la la)
The world was going crazy
Everyone weak, everything still (la la la la la)
And there was distant marching
Simple and somehow sublime
Giving the Nations a new syncopation
The HETALIA RAGTIME!

JAPAN: Japan was ambitious. Very ambitious. Asserting his presence in the Western world by any means necessary, Japan allied himself with the rising powers of -

GERMANY: Germany, who had come under new leadership - promising hope and wealth and change to his beleaguered people.

ITALY: Italy was just along for the ride! And also to help Germany, because Italy’s always loved Germany the most and - oh, also, Italy had a new boss, too.

AXIS POWERS: These days were quite explosive,
Red, gold, and black,
Fire and storm -

JAPAN: Land of the rising sun -

GERMANY: - dictating everyone -

JAPAN: Sovereignty!

GERMANY: Lots of -

ITALY: Let’s all get some pasta!

ALLIED POWERS: [indiscriminate arguing]

ALLIED POWERS: The Hetalia Ragtime! Listen to that Ragtime!

ENGLAND: In Europe, well, to put it bluntly, everyone was in deep shit. England, constantly plagued from the air -

FRANCE: - hey, don’t forget about France, it’s not just you, you know -

AMERICA: - and America charging in ready to be the hero and save everyone!

ENGLAND: God help us all.

AMERICA, ENGLAND, FRANCE: Sirens and air raid drills,
Trenches carved out of hills,
New innovations -

RUSSIA (breaking away from ALLIED POWERS group): And Communist Nations!

AMERICA, aside: Christ.

CHINA: Meanwhile the other Allied powers were having a very different time of things. China, in particular, had not wished to involve himself increasingly in International affairs, but the changing world mandated that he do so.

LATVIA: Oh no, Russia’s coming -

BALTIC STATES: [terror]

RUSSIA: Mighty Soviet Russia supplied by far the most to this conflict, in terms of military might, defense, and monetary contribution.

LITHUANIA: But - but that’s because you had so many other countries to -

RUSSIA: Russia loved everyone and wanted everyone to love him as well, and be one with him. Because everyone will be one with Russia someday.

CHINA: Not. Now.

RUSSIA (moving his hand from China’s personal space, smiling): Oh?

AXIS POWERS: And there was distant marching
Changing the tune, changing the time (la la la la la)

ALLIED POWERS: Giving the Nations a new syncopation -

AMERICA: You see, certain countries are destined to be great -

CANADA: Uh-huh.

AMERICA: And standing in opposition to fascism and communism alike -

CANADA: - even though they’re nothing alike at all -

AMERICA: - were the mighty and heroic America -

CANADA: - and Canada, and thanks for the using the plural. By the way, I narrate. So, eh. So don’t confuse the two of us.

PRUSSIA: Oh, who’s Mighty and Heroic? Huh?

CANADA: Aren’t you supposed to be dead?

PRUSSIA: I got better. Also, I’m awesome.

AUSTRIA: Prussia [coughs] was amongst the nations changed and contested and destroyed -

PRUSSIA: I was not destroyed.

AUSTRIA: - by the previous stages of conflict in Europe that acted as a precursor to the current situation.

HUNGARY: Like with Hungary and Austria. Who aren’t, uhm. Together anymore. Even though we’re still really close.

ITALY: And that’s really sad, because even further in the past, it was Austria who was in charge of everybody, including the Holy Roman Empire, not the first one, but the one who’s now -

AUSTRIA: [cough]

ITALY: - what?

AUSTRIA: Spoiler.

HUNGARY: It can’t be a spoiler if it happened centuries ago.

ITALY: Whee~!

ALL: It’s a new game we’re playing
Catching the Nations in their prime
Third-world and millionaire
Everyone everywhere - HETALIA RAGTIME!

And there was distant marching
Skipping a beat, singing a dream (la la la la la)
A new, insistent music
Brighter than fire, hotter than steam (la la la la la)
The towering clouds of warfare
Suddenly starting to climb
It was the music of something beginning
An era exploding, a century spinning
In riches and rags and in rhythm and rhyme -
The Hetalia Ragtime!

Make Them Hear You
(Prussia, Germany)

CANADA: Right, eh. That narration. This is the Second World War. The first, they called it the Great War back then, well. In the decades before this story starts, Germany ended up taking most of the blame and paying the most in reparations of all the defeated Central Powers. And that’s…that’s not all he lost.

PRUSSIA: Go out and tell our story
Let it echo far and wide
Make them hear you, make them hear you

How justice was our battle
And how justice was denied
Make them hear you, make them hear you

And say to those who blame us for the world we tried to make
That sometimes there are paths that other Nations dare not take.

And I could not put down my sword
And that was my mistake
Make them hear you, make them hear you

My path may lead to heaven or hell,
And God will say what’s best
But one thing he will never say
Is that I went quietly to my rest.

Go out and tell our story
Carve it in the earth itself
Make it hear you, make them hear you.

When you stretch our Nations’ boundaries
When you spread our Nations’ wealth,
Make them hear you, make them hear you

Proclaim it with your cannons,
With your stories and your songs -
Teach every child of mine to whom this land of ours belongs -
And that will be the righting of a thousand of my wrongs,
Make them hear you.
When they hear you, I’ll be near you - be strong.

‘Til We Reach That Day
(Germany, Italy, Japan, Axis Powers)

GERMANY: There’s a day of hope
May I live to see,
When our hearts are happy
And our land is free.
Let that new day dawn -
And the world will pray
That there’s kinder wrath from heaven
When they reach that day.

GERMANY (lead), ITALY, JAPAN: A day of peace,
A day of pride,
A day of justice we have been denied
Where we stand immune
To the world’s decay
There’ll be kinder wrath from heaven
When they reach that day.

GERMANY: What they did to me,
When they took from me -
I had life in me,
Life in all my people.
Look what they left of me,
Left of me, left of my world.

ITALY: They all feared him,
They feared you and your brother.

GERMANY: Prussia -

ITALY: He was a trouble to them,
They destroyed him,

ITALY, JAPAN (and AUSTRIA, HUNGARY, AXIS): destroyed him, destroyed him, and -

GERMANY: Our land shall run red -

AXIS: A day of peace
A day of pride

GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN: They will meet a worse fate!

AXIS: A day of justice we have been denied

GERMANY: It will happen again, and again,

AXIS: Let the new day dawn

GERMANY: Why does nobody care?

JAPAN: There is blood in the air.

ITALY: We have voices and souls!

GERMANY: What is wrong with my country?

JAPAN: There’s a whole world out there

GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN: There are people out there -

AXIS: Give the people a day of peace,
A day of pride,
A day of justice we have been denied.
Let the new day dawn,
Let the victors pray
That there’s kinder wrath from heaven
When they reach that day.

So Much For the Allies
(America, England, Russia, France, China)

CANADA: Well, that. That gives you an idea of how it started. And considering the strength of the Axis Powers, and how many Nations they had angered and intimidated, anyone standing against them would require powerful allies. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” after all…

AMERICA: Sorry I’m la- [stares at Russia]

RUSSIA: [smile]

AMERICA: You.

RUSSIA: Such a rude little boy. People of good breeding do not glare at other people. They acknowledge them politely with a smile... like this.

Good day.

FRANCE: Good day, Russia.

RUSSIA: It's been a while
Since we could stand
This close at hand
And call it friendship!

ENGLAND: Ironic, isn't it?

RUSSIA: Isn't it?
Now that we're working together,
Isn't it?

FRANCE and RUSSIA: Nothing like we've ever...

AMERICA: He's looking at me, England.

RUSSIA: [smile]

ENGLAND: Ignore him.

AMERICA: I didn't come all this way to
Offer my friendship to communists.
Where's your humanity?

ENGLAND: Dead.

FRANCE: All too true.

AMERICA: I thought I'd charge to the front
Like a hero and try to save everyone,
Can't we do that?

FRANCE: No dice.

AMERICA: That's impossible.
Look on the bright side of things!
I can come up with a weapon that ends war forever-

ENGLAND: Sshh. Not in front of-

FRANCE: He talks.

AMERICA: I've never been in a war
Where we have to keep secrets from everyone.
Is this a Europe thing?

RUSSIA: I see that.

ENGLAND: Stop.

FRANCE: He also stares.

RUSSIA: Oh?

FRANCE: You'd think he'd been
Raised in a barn,
Or something.

ENGLAND: -what.

AMERICA: Actually, that's about right.

RUSSIA: That's children,
Isn't it?

ENGLAND: Stop.

FRANCE: Isn't it?

AMERICA: No!

FRANCE and RUSSIA: Always another surprise,
Isn't it?

CHINA: [entering...] […sigh]

FRANCE: Well.

RUSSIA: Well.
[encroaching-] Let us then get started.

CHINA: [dismissing] Would you please get off me?

ENGLAND and FRANCE: So much for the allies...

Your Father’s Son
(England)

ENGLAND: Father had an empire
Ruled it very well
Stretched down from the heavens
To the depths of hell
He would have your fealty
And he’d think he’d won -
You have your father’s hands,
You are your father’s son.

Father never thought that
You’d grow up to crave
All that he could teach you,
All the world he gave
All that pride and pleasure
Would amount to none
Only what mattered most
You are your father’s son.

Wouldn’t hear my reason
- all my laws, denied --
I watched you defy me,
Crazy with your pride
All that I had made you
All that I had found -

Only darkness and pain,
The anger and pain,
The blood and the pain,
I buried my pain in the ground, in the ground
When I knelt on that battleground.

Father had an empire,
Now those days are gone
Now you have the heavens,
All that lies beyond
And all the hope I claim
Since leaving me undone
You have your father’s dreams - forgive me.
You are your father’s son.

Journey On
(Germany, Japan, Italy)

GERMANY: A salute to the Nation aligning with me,
A salute to this powerful stranger.
Heaven smiles on your land rising up from the sea
For the world we're both forced to endanger.
It is more than mere wealth and mere power
That directs all your forces-your lines are drawn.
A salute to the land who is lending his strength,
Journey on!

JAPAN: You are fenced on all sides by a powerful foe,
And you know this-they once called you brother.
Yet you shunned their embrace and the life you could know,
Holding your land above any other.
Do you see in my land what you're losing?
Are you moved by the words I rely upon?
A salute to a country in search of its heart,
Journey on.

GERMANY: Journey on!

BOTH: Two proud Nations,
Are emerging from the darkness,

JAPAN: One turning from,

GERMANY: One waking to,

BOTH: its promises.
Two worlds meeting
At the moment of a journey,
For that moment in the darkness, we're allied.

ITALY: And what of the Nations whose boundaries chafe,

GERMANY: My friend, I salute you.

ITALY: Who give love so freely and end up unsafe?

JAPAN: May you gain what you seek.

ITALY: I'm in this all for you, Germany,

THE THREE: As we go (as we go, as we go)
Reaching for (reaching for, reaching for)
Victory (victory, victory)
We're three proud Nations,
All emerging from the darkness

JAPAN: All turning from,

GERMANY and ITALY: or waking to,

THE THREE: its promises.
Strangers sharing
The beginnings of a journey

GERMANY: I salute you!

ITALY: God be with you.

JAPAN: I will join you.

THE THREE: In the dark before the dawn,
Journey on!

Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik!
(Russia)

RUSSIA: The shell I shot Tsar Nikolai with
I keep on a little silver chain.
It's how I can so abstractly explain
Of how I rose up from that land's charred remains!

I. Was. A.
Proud imperial Nation but the eagles' wings were molting
One Sunday I looked out and all the peasants were revolting
They seemed to really want me-and I’ll say, they got me quick,
And now I'm Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik!

I execute the royal family and call it an improvement,
And find love for my people in a Marxist sort of movement
I get it through their heads (although they sometimes can be thick)
And now I'm Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik!

Stars shine on a flag of red
Golden tools of work crossed right beside
People live on I can provide
Soon this way of life will be worldwide!

So pretty, this flag of red,
Wrapping all my people up in me
Everyone is warm and safe and free
What a lovely place this world will be!

Not everyone gets it, I'm sorry to say
But they too will be one with Russia someday
The world is too warm to know this to be true:
In Soviet Russia, the war begins you.

And I am waking every morning filled with such anticipation
Of blanketing the earth under the banner of one nation
So kindly hold this hammer and this sickle and this pick
And someday soon the world will see
The sunflowers and harmony
Remember when my name goes by
(That's Браг - и - н - с - к - и - й) [pronounced: BRAHG - ii - en - es - ka - ii - ai]
the Nation who embraced you, though you thought it was a trick
of brotherhood, camaraderie
of life as it was meant to be
of Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik!

Crime of the Century (Boy in the Crate)
(Italy, Chorus)

ITALY: I was once the sweetheart of the H.R.E. -

CHORUS: The Holy Roman Empire?

ITALY: Yeah, that's he!
He did some paintings, all of me,
And then grew up and now he's Germany!
(Not that he remembers a thing, your Honors-)
When we met again it was the First World War
(And not on the same side)
Ooh! Oh! Now he's a creepy man -
Bang! Bang! All about Deutschland!
Guns! Hate! And isn't it great?
'Cause now I'm the boy in the crate!

And it's the crime of the century

CHORUS: Crime of the century!

ITALY: Giving the world some hell-
Germany's rising and Italy follows and now we've both got Japan as well! WHEE!

The crime of the century

CHORUS: Crime of the century!
Got the world on a plate -

ITALY: Fortune, fame, and a dangerous game,
and now I'm the boy in the crate!

Ooh! Oh! Can't take it anymore
I - I- can't let him lose the war
Boo! hoo! because then I might find
that Germany's missing

CHORUS: That Germany's missing - !

BOTH: The HRE parts of his mind!
And it's the crime of the century,
crime of the century
making the world go WHEE~
Germany's bombing and Japan is invading but

ITALY: Everyone hates poor Italy!
Crime of the century, crime of the century
Taking the wheel of fate -
See, I'd like to be in his Reich
'Cause now I'm the boy in the

CHORUS: Now he's the boy in the -

ITALY: Now I'm the boy in the crate! wheeeeee~!

What A Game (World War Version)
(France, Austria, Germany, Ensemble)

CANADA: And now that all that exposition’s taken care of itself, we can get started. Phew. France, [sigh] kick us off.

FRANCE: In a world gone mad there is comfort to be had
In the games that we've played for years;
Men of skill, going for the kill!
Where liberté, egalité, and FRATERNITE disappears …

This is the kind of night to go out and fight
Time to leave the trenches
The kind of night that makes it a chore to stay
Let's go you sons of bitches, my finger itches
YES, FEAR THE FRENCH, yes!

AUSTRIA: The troops are closing in again,

FRANCE: Oh? Let's play!
Those bastards haven't got a prayer.

AUSTRIA: France, they're everywhere.

FRANCE: Suck my rose, bitch.
Go back to where your fatherland came!
LOAD THOSE GUNS!

GERMANY: Don't let him scare you.

FRANCE: WHET THOSE KNIVES!

GERMANY: He's all talk.

FRANCE: What! A! Game!

Hey, Germany, what's the only thing in the world bigger and scarier than your brother's five-meter cock?

GERMANY: The hole it left in your ass?

FRANCE: … I was going to say "your ego", but that was actually really funny.

FRANCE and AUSTRIA: In old wars we were gentlemen,
Men were gentlemen -

GERMANY: Euphemism.

FRANCE and AUSTRIA: We'd have the fiercest battles and break for tea.

GERMANY: And Christmas, I remember.

FRANCE and AUSTRIA: There was a course of action,
Just land and factions and -

GERMANY: Common schism.

AUSTRIA: The worst we'd ever say would be

FRANCE: Your father was a hamster!

FRANCE and AUSTRIA: Though we're both forward-thinking
We think you're dinking with good old warfare!
This whole stormtrooper thing is a shame!

GERMANY: RAISE YOUR SHIELDS.

FRANCE: Mon dieu,

GERMANY: FORWARD MARCH.

FRANCE: such a cliché,

THE THREE: WHAT! A! GAME!

Old-school invasion, that's just great
Just plain trench warfare, tête-à-tête
The planes are circling overhead

[INTERLUDE]

FRANCE: Oh shit, we're all gonna wind up dead!
This is the kind of night to give up the fight
Time to leave the country
The kind of night that makes it a chore to stay
A fine uplifting atmosphere,
Bring your children here -

GERMANY: Teach them German!

FRANCE: The game that all of Europe knows how to play.
It's only retribution, the institution of global warfare
Where every man is treated the same!

ENSEMBLE: VISORS DOWN!

FRANCE: … fuck.

ENSEMBLE: BEAT RETREAT!

FRANCE: Oh that's just great.

ENSEMBLE: What a - what a - WHAT! A! GAME!

GERMANY: Now what was that you said about my ego?

ACT II

Our Children
(England, China)

CANADA: Thanks for coming back for the second half. So. One of the…well, I can’t say it’s a good thing, especially considering what happened, but one of the things about World War Two was how it pushed both America and Japan onto the global stage. Both countries were emerging from periods of isolation as truly frightening powers-and their war, the one in the Pacific, caused suffering in Nations not their own.

ENGLAND: How they fight, thinking it’s some kind of game
They are really quite the same,
Our children.

CHINA: How they want. He has never wanted this.

ENGLAND: Living life as hit-or-miss,

BOTH: Our children.

CHINA: See the scope of what they claim
See the shade they cast -

ENGLAND: On the future,

CHINA: From the past.

ENGLAND: How they crave, so unheeding and alone,

BOTH: Claiming it all as their own
Our children.

CHINA: One so fair,

ENGLAND: And the other lithe and dark,

BOTH: Solemn hope and sudden spark,
Our children.

See how brightly they all burn
See what they’ve amassed -
For the future, from the past.
There they stand
Making their mark on this land
They’re forever hand in hand,
Our children.

Two small lives silhouetted by the blue
One like me and one like you
Our children.

Alfred Jones
(America, Ensemble)

AMERICA: See my people?
Well, here’s my theory
Of what will strengthen
Our country’s bones -
Every man on his own foundation!
And that’s the Nation of Alfred Jones!

One’s a lawyer, and one’s a teacher
And one stacks files, and one stacks stones
The world keeps moving toward new creations -

ENSEMBLE: And that’s the Nation of Alfred Jones!
Hallelujah! Praise the maker
Of the atom bomb!

AMERICA: Let’s save the world, let’s save the world, yeah!

ENSEMBLE: Hallelujah-

AMERICA: Wait, no gods here!

ENSEMBLE: It’s amazing how far some Nations can come!

AMERICA: Let’s save the world, let’s save the world, yeah! Let’s save the world, let’s save the world, yeah!

ENSEMBLE: Innovation will sweep the Nation,
A man’s own wealth is what that man owns -

AMERICA: Even people without ambition
Can get behind the American mission -
From postal worker to politician
For Alfred Jones!

ENSEMBLE: Alfred Jones! Alfred Jones! Alfred Jones!

AMERICA: Fasten your seatbelts -

ALL: For things unknown -

AMERICA: Get ready, world!

The Night the War Was Done (At Least On Land)
(Italy, Germany, Axis)

ITALY: It was spring in Italy,
And the air was only heat,
And my people showed that they would take a stand.
So they caught up with my boss,
And they hung him by his feet,
The night the war was done, at least on land.

It was over all too fast,
And the government was through,
And my troops were under nobody's command.
So I thought that things could change,
Not that I knew what to do,
The night the war was done, at least on land.

GERMANY: You!

ITALY: He heard Germany say -

GERMANY: How could you get this way?

AXIS: Hetalia!

GERMANY: Dragging me down at every turn,
Looks like some people never learn,
You!

ITALY: He thought he said...

AXIS: Hetalia!

GERMANY: Throwing wrenches in every plan,
Don't you know what you people can do?

ITALY: His head was spinning!

AXIS: People starving and cold, my friend.
Nations broken and why for?
Years of struggling to meet their cruel demands.
Leave your little canals my friend.
There are causes to die for!

ITALY: In the dreams of other Nations
I have tried to find some meaning,
With my eyes on all your futures,
I could not forget our pasts.
But it's time to end this suffering -
And I don't think your way should be how.

GERMANY: Italy,

ITALY: Life had meaning -

GERMANY: I'll show you how!

ITALY: Till now!

GERMANY: Italy, do not leave us now!

ITALY: But my people don't want war,
And I'm not sure what to do,
But I know there are some things I understand.
And I have to choose for them,
Even though I care for you.
Tonight, the war is done...

GERMANY: Italy, why?

ITALY: At least on land...

Gliding
(Japan, China)

JAPAN: Hush. Do not cry. Do not be afraid. It is I. Only I.
Hush. Look. Hush. Look what I have brought for you.
See the aeroplanes.
Such a lovely flock of aeroplanes.
Before you can see them, they’re gone.

Look, how grand!
This is you on land, resigning to my command.
In the sky above -
They are gliding.
Gliding through the clouds.
Close your eyes, close your eyes,
They are gliding, gliding high above,
Close your eyes, close your eyes,
Feel the wind, as you witness it …
Are you happy yet?
Are you happy yet?

You once told your brother,
“Imagine you’re fearless, imagine you’re fearless and soon you won’t fear!”
When I’d be afraid, I imagine my brother.
He leads me along
I can see him. He’s here.
And we’re gliding, gliding far above.
Witness it.
Feel the wind.
Feel the wind, how strong it is.
Glide with me, elder one.
Glide with me, brother.
I’ve never looked back.

Fields of Our Dream
(Russia, China)

RUSSIA: Don't hide your face.
Please let me see you.
I look in those eyes.
How wise they seem.
Now when you are strong again,
We'll embrace them or punish them,
Whatever grows in the fields of our dream.

We'll take the skies,

CHINA: Take the skies,

RUSSIA: And make them brighter,

CHINA: Make them shine,

RUSSIA: 'Til heaven and earth,

CHINA: Heaven and earth,

RUSSIA: Are our regime,

CHINA: Mmm...

RUSSIA: No matter how high or deep,

CHINA: As we sow, so shall they reap,

BOTH: Whatever grows
In the fields of our dream,

RUSSIA: Yes, our day is dawning now, China,
And our flag is starting to rise.
Any man can get where he wants to
If he's got some red in his eyes.
We'll see justice, China,
And plenty of men
Who will stand up
And give us our due.
Oh, China, it's more than promises.
China, it must be true.
A world that lets a place like me
Find my star, carve my path, pave the way for you
For you ...

CHINA: For you ...

BOTH: Beyond that road,
Beyond this lifetime
Those stars of hope
Will always gleam!
With the promise of happiness
And the freedom we'll live to know.
We'll stand with out fists held high,
Just as high as our reach can go,
Whatever grows -
What we can grow -
In the fields of our dream.

Roman Empire
(Italy, Germany)

ITALY: There was no chance that we could win this fight
Why don't we just stick to what we know?
Just me and you, hey does that feel all right?
Memories all sweet and slow?

GERMANY: Useless stories, like you used to tell.

ITALY: That was so long ago…
Roman Empire, don't forget me
Roman Empire, it's our only chance,
You said you'd love me most, no matter how time passes
Roman Empire, take these pants.

GERMANY: Why do I have this kind of memory?
Where did it come from, why did it go away?
So much time has passed for you and me -

ITALY: Then I've gotta make you stay.

BOTH: Nothing for it but a painting or two
Since 800 A.D. …
Roman Empire, please remember
Roman Empire, it's our only chance
You said you'd love me most, no matter how time passes
Roman Empire …
Take …
These…

ITALY: Pants…

Back to Before (Imperialist Version)
(England)

ENGLAND: There was a time our happiness seemed neverending,
I was so sure that where we were heading was right.
Life was a road, so certain and straight and unbending,
Our little road with never a crossroad in sight,
Back in the days when we spoke in congruent voices,
Your hand in mine, a prosperous future in store,
Back in the days when you let me make all your choices...
We can never go back to before

There was a time your eyes never left my horizon,
I'd sail away, you'd watch until you couldn't see.
How could I know the sea was what you had your eyes on?
All of my dreams, and I let you take them from me!
Back in the days when everything seemed so much clearer,
Your hand in mine, with never desire for more.
Where are they now, those eyes with the waves for their mirror?
We can never go back to before.

There are people out there unafraid of revealing
That they might have a feeling,
Or they might have been wrong,
There are people out there unafraid to feel sorrow,
Unafraid of tomorrow, unafraid to be weak, unafraid to be strong...

There was a time when I had your love and devotion.
That was our way! a world without weakness and war.
You were my sky, my moon and my stars and my ocean...
We can never go back to before!

He Wanted to Say (Atomic Bomb Song)
(America, Japan, England, China)

AMERICA: Japan, Japan, we need to talk.

JAPAN: I have nothing to say to you.

AMERICA: But I have something to say to you.

JAPAN: Then say it.

AMERICA: I - I know that if -

ENGLAND: He wanted to say,
“I am sick of these injustices.”
He wanted to say,
“You could take this world apart.
We both have to share this planet,
Take it from the men who ran it -
Let this battle be the last
In which we both have to take part.

He wanted to say,

AMERICA: All I want is for this war to stop.

ENGLAND: He wanted to say,

AMERICA: Couldn’t I believe in you?

ENGLAND and AMERICA: In my soul, I am your brother.
We are bound to one another,
Angered by the darkness of life
And the pasts we perceive.

ENGLAND: But all he said was,

AMERICA: I know how to blow things up.

CHINA: He wanted to say,

JAPAN: I am not all I appear to be.

CHINA: He wanted to say,

JAPAN: Don’t you dare stand in my path,

JAPAN and CHINA: Every day I wake up knowing
Something’s lost in how time’s flowing.
I will not be dashed upon the shore in your country’s wrath!

CHINA and ENGLAND: Two proud Nations,
For a moment in the darkness

JAPAN: One turning from,

AMERICA: One waking to,

THE FOUR: its promises.

CHINA and ENGLAND: Two proud Nations,
Only finding, in the darkness,
Its fire -

AMERICA and JAPAN: - fire -

CHINA: He wanted to say,

JAPAN: How I envy you your innocence.

ENGLAND: He wanted to say,

AMERICA: I can’t take this anymore.

ALL FOUR: In my soul I am your brother.
We are bound to one another,
Angered by the darkness of life and the fires of war

AMERICA: The new fires of war -

CHINA: But all he said was -

JAPAN: [draws his sword]

[explosion]

Epilogue (and ‘Til We Reach That Day reprise)
(Ensemble)

[Ragtime theme plays.]

CANADA: The war in the Pacific officially ended with Japan’s surrender on the fifteenth of August, 1945. There was still a lot to work out, considering all that had to happen in order to push Japan to surrender in the first place.

FRANCE: France eventually recovered from the German occupation and persists as a political and cultural power to this day, despite mockery from the rest of the world. Alas, they seem to forget how tenacious I am…

GERMANY: After surrendering to the Allied Forces, steps were taken to assure that Germany would never again be able to accomplish what it had during and preceding the war. Germany was occupied and partitioned for several decades, policed by capitalists in the west and communists in the east. The Nation has not forgotten and will not forget what was done to it…but it hasn’t forgotten what it did, either, and that, it cannot forget.

ITALY: Italy reworked its government and faded into political obscurity again! Whee~!

RUSSIA: Russia very much liked America’s new toy and made several of his own. America played with him for many years, and it is a fun and dangerous game, yes? It is the kind of game where no one wins, though. That is all right, because everyone will be one with Russia someday. Including the audience.

CHINA: Being betrayed, invaded, and nearly destroyed forced China onto the global stage. China eventually resolved its inner conflicts in favor of a new communist government and tried to burn its own past away. When that didn’t work, China resigned himself to playing the game that the other Nations were playing-and playing to win.

PRUSSIA: Prussia was dead. Very dead. BUT STILL AWESOME.

ENGLAND: The United Kingdom experienced intense victor’s-guilt on behalf of the United States, who refused to feel any guilt at all, the ingrate. [sigh] Be that as it may, the changing stage of warfare required that England and America agree to a mutual defense treaty and other means of support and preservation. To this day, they act in concert, reconciling their differences one at a time.

AMERICA: America saved the day! And emerged from this all as a world superpower, in every field imaginable-in war, in commerce, in science, in everything. America’s always been the place that people go, but now it’s the place that people go to, and that’s awesome. So many people to help, so little time.

JAPAN: Japan was not sorry. But Japan accepted its fate, and permitted itself to be disarmed and occupied. But there are other means of Empire, and when Japan finally recovered from what America had done to it, Japan achieved this Empire covertly, insinuating itself into the global market and attaining economic superiority.

CANADA: The Second World War is discussed differently depending on the country doing the discussion. There’s no good way to encapsulate it-as many stories exist about this conflict as there were people in it. But even though it’s over now, and most of the people who survived it are dead or dying, the effects of the war still show in what our people, our Nations, and our planet have become.

ENSEMBLE: A day of peace,
A day of pride,
A day of justice we have been denied.
Let the new day dawn,
And the Earth will pray.
That there’s kinder wrath from heaven
When we reach that day.

Omake (New Fandom)
(Mith, Puel, Linden)

PUEL: Where have I been?
How did we change?
Caught in this strange
New fandom?
Say,
Was I away too long?

MITH: Who'd ever think
Countries were queer?
Don't people fear
This fandom?

PUEL: Why?
We're doing nothing wrong.

LINDEN: The world personified?
I call it bona-fide
A work of genius, that I'll say.

MITH and PUEL: Make way for the nerds and geeks,
Come with us and play!

ALL THREE: New fandom!
Love or hate,
It stands up to debate,
Sure it's offensive--but not wrong!

PUEL: And I ask myself,
Can't we just get along?

ALL: The world personified,
Sure, others run and hide,
But we're not standing in their way.
You will be assimilated,
Come, let us play,
New fandom!
Love or hate,
Well, WE ALL THINK IT'S GREAT!
And we're all having so much fun--

Don't take offense,
Don't be alarmed,
It's just a game,
No one's been harmed
Here,
Loving Hetalia!
