I think that a day in the life of Alfred in the normal Hetalian world would get you the best result, as you can use what is happening in the news, politics, entertainment, sports and what is happening in American pop culture to draw from.

I live in the UK, so sadly I've never been to New York, although I hope to one day! But I've been on the London underground a few times when visiting the city, so I kinda imagine the New York subway being similar to it xD;
