He awoke to the feel of a slim, feminine hand giving his shoulder a hard shake.
“Wake up!” a voice hissed in his ear.
Latvia clenched his eyes shut and then slowly peered up into the cold face of Belarus. His blood froze and squeaked faintly, pushing away from her. His chair rocked back several inches, and all at once he was shivering violently, the trembling worsening when he heard the softly stifled laughter from his other side.
He turned to come face to face with Russia’s other sister, Ukraine. She gave him a small smile that, while he still held himself rigidly, led him to relax slightly.
“The meeting will be starting soon,” she told him gently, but Latvia noticed the redness around her eyes undoubtedly from recent tears. A quick glance at Belarus indicated that, while she presented a face of stoic calmness, clearly showed the same signs of deep weariness.
Latvia looked away, hugging his arms, and stared worriedly at his bag, still on the table.
“I’m... I’m sorry,” he whispered. Sorry for needing them to wake him up,

A flutter of activity at the head of the table caught his eye. America, France, and England were bunched together arguing. Germany approached holding a large set of charts...
The meeting would be starting soon.
Ukraine followed his gaze, her eyes settling on Germany’s somber face.
“We should warn him, you know,” she said, leaning down to whisper softly for only him and Belarus to hear. “They can’t just.. ignore us...”
“And our sickness...” was what went unsaid. They were fast becoming the weakest states of Europe... and its most contagious.
Latvia knew they weren’t the only nations suffering or feeling fatigued, but... if the rest of Europe didn’t help... and their pain increased... He felt a chill down his spine and shivered at the cold thought of lonely suffering.
But there was warmth where Ukraine hovered uneasily by his shoulder and her worried frown showed the same unspoken fears of being abandoned by the world.
“Even... Even if they do... leave us... or. Or even if things get... worse...,” Latvia started and paused,
