Self-sufficient a colony as America was, there were certain limits to how much responsibility he could be expected to shoulder.
Luckily for Alfred, bathing was even less of a necessity for children than it was for adults, if one could call it a necessity at all. What with the pains one endured to prepare a bath in those days, lacking the conveniences of indoor plumbing and running water, it had understandably fallen out of fashion from the time of the Ancients.
Unfortunately for England, bathing tended to be more of a necessity for Alfred than for most children.
So, after a dismayed scolding, Arthur bid his charge to remain there in the yard where he'd discovered him in the pig pen while he took on the grueling task of drawing water from the well, bucket by bleeding bucket, to fill the wooden wash tub in back of the house
