Gloria Patri, [1/3] anonymous January 31 2009, 15:48:44 UTC
April 15, 1917. Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France.

Once, 'Captain Kirkland' had been the name of a dread pirate and Arthur had sailed to the ends of the earth on white wings of canvas. Now, 'Captain Kirkland' was a very tired man wading up to his calves in mud and shreds of barbed wire and bits of unfortunate young men. He was dreaded primarily by the five equally weary soldiers he had bellowed and bullied into searching alongside him.

Searching for...searching for a needle in a haystack. One body among hundreds, thousands, probably even tens of thousands. One body that was not quite as dead as the others. Because as long as Ottawa kept sending men over, the Dominion of Canada couldn't be dead ( ... )

April 16.

He was dry.

That was the first thing Matthew noticed and later it would strike him as rather pathetic that it had been so long since he'd not been wet that came as such a surprise. The second thing he noticed was that his mouth tasted like Satan had built a privy in it. And the third was that whoever was whistling "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" was horribly flat. In a very familiar way.

He blinked up at the white canvas roof of the hospital tent. "...Alfie?"

The whistling stopped (mercifully) and a blur of rosy cheeks and golden hair swam into his blurry vision. "Long time no see, Mattie! Not that this was my first choice of reunion locales, but got to work with what's on hand. Hah, and that goes for this, too." Alfred held up the project he'd been bent over a moment before. Matthew could make out a flash of silver and a pair of needlenose pliers but couldn't fathom what they were for. There were bigger questions in his foggy mind. "What are you doing here?", for instance ( ... )

I LOVE YOU, AUTHOR.

This was truly, truly great and amazing. Seriously, this made my day. Thankyou for writing this so much! I hope you write more Canada-centric fanfiction in the future!

Oh, lovely! Thank you for this! You see so few fics showing how the nations deal with each other on an actual battlefield.

AHHHHHHH You gave Canada the EXACT voice that he would have had! That's the most perfect Canada yet. Loyal, but with secrets. Commonwealth, and yet very much his own man.

Nice work, Anon!
This Canadanon appreciates your skill and sensitivity with her nation (who is so simple on the surface, but so complex underneath!)

(also, just so you know, you kind of un-anoned there)

Where are you from? Because you've tackled the subject better (perhaps more objectively) than most Canadians here, really.

Ah, wow. This is very beautifully written! I can really tell that you've put much thought in to writing this... the choice of words, names, etc. One thing I really loved was the seemingly "real" emotions emitting from the characters. And especially from Matthew, there is a great sense of humanly complexity and conflict in his mentality. Yet one would find him boring if they do not look beyond the surface.

Aaaa, I don't know what I'm saying! I think what I'm trying to say is that you've really got the deeper meaning of being in Canada's position, and that's pretty impressive from someone outside the country! <333

Oh man, I LOVED this. The England-US-Canada dynamic here is absolutely fantastic. I think what really made this piece for me, though, was how you handled the countries' identities-- as still very human, living among people, and with human emotions, but with that hint of difference that makes them countries. Um. Yes. LOOOOVE.

Although the story is very well written, I must say I am very disappointed in the UK/Canada regard of the prompt. This fill doesn't seem to show any feeling of Canada towards England, so as a fill to a prompt explicitly asked for a pair, I am rather disappointed.
But the story is indeed quite brilliant.
