Romano/Spain - homophobic mafia human au

I've read some mafia human AU's where the member's reactions to Romano liking Spain aren't too extreme, or they are sometimes supportive. I'd like to read one that kind of explores what would happen if the mafia weren't supportive and were very homophobic instead, and would hurt any members found out to be gay, and if not them then they hurt the person they're attracted to instead. I'd like to see what Romano would do or feel, especially if Antonio comes on the scene at some point and Romano knows he's getting into dangerous territory, not just for himself but unsafe for Antonio too.

Bonus: Romano has the same opinion as the rest of them until he realises he is gay.

You know, this is something that always bothered me a little. Mafia is big on the whole macho man thing, bragging about how many girls you've had sex with, making a point of showing how masculine and not homo you are, using homophobic slurs, etc. A mafia boss being openly gay would get killed by his own family for bringing shame on them. Mafiosi are kind of dickheads like that, you know.

So, seconding in the hopes of a slightly more realistic take on a mafia!AU.

Just wanna point this out, but actually it can be a bit accepted for a Mafia boss being not entirely straight (being completely and utterly gay is another story) so long as he's not the one taking it, if you know what I mean.

I checked and the ideas are controversial. Some researches say it's a complete no-no, others say it's marginally accepted if it's a big boss and he keeps it hush. It probably varies according to the place too - apparently it's a bigger taboo in the 'ndrangheta?

I still think that the Mafia is more homophobic than how it's usually depicted on the meme - especially when it's an AU in which Romano wouldn't automatically get respect because he's South Italy. But not trying to start wank here, I really think this is interesting and you've actually pointed me towards some cool articles (I'd link, but they're in Italian).

I hope I'm not discouraging anybody from filling! I don't mean to hijack the request or anything. Be as accurate or as inaccurate as you want, anons!
