Let me contribute with some facts:

During the Cold War India never really took a side the country was friendly to both sides but a little more (a little more means they had a Treaty of Friendship with Soviet Russia) to the URSS and they had strategical and militar cooperation

Today's Russia also enjoy a close relation they have complementary exports and import products and do cooperation in the spatial, nuclear and pharmaceutical field where is hard to get help from richer countries. And they are both part of the BRICS group they share political goals.

In fact they are constantly prising they friendship, they are also rivals in some fields and there are interest in both sides but they get along pretty well in a whole. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India%E2%80%93Russia_relations
