England+America - Adoption anonymous October 5 2011, 21:48:50 UTC
Human AU. Arthur's a kindergarten teacher at a nice elementary school. One day he gets a new student: Alfred. As time goes on Arthur starts to notice similarities between himself and Alfred (similar taste in food, allergies, personality quirks, whatever) along with a vague physical resemblance. Eventually it hits him: little Alfred’s the son he gave up for adoption when he was in college. Arthur wants to know more about Alfred, but since he’s not 100% sure Al’s his son, he also doesn’t want to overstep his bounds as a teacher. To complicate matters further, Arthur realizes that Alfred doesn’t have a happy home life (Neglectful or abusive parents. No sexual abuse).

Bonus: Since Alfred is very young, he doesn’t realize his family is unstable and doesn’t want to leave his parents.
Bonus 2: Happy ending

Seconded. I'd try it myself, but I don't think I could manage the proper ratio of fluff to angst this prompt really needs.

Considering filling this. Does OP have any preferences for little Alfred's adoptive parents? Or requests for any other specific characters to make appearances?

I can more than manage bonus two, and bonus one with a sort-of twist. Potential Author!Anon is an elementary school substitute teacher. Kids can be starter than you could even imagine. They can recognize who really loves them. But, parents are still parents to kids at that age, right?

I have no preference for Alfred's parents. If you want to make them OCs that's fine as well. I am a sucker for FrUK so if you could work France in there somewhere it'd be much appreciated. :)

I suppose you're right about kids being able to read the atmosphere of their home life. Having grown up in a tense environment as a child, I was always aware when things weren't right even when I was very little. Since you have experience working with young children, I have complete faith in however you wish to interpret the first bonus :)

Hey, OP. Just wanted to let you know that I am really working on this, I haven't forgotten about it, and that it is my NaNoWriMo project. It's the first time I've had an idea I wanted to pursue for it! I'm not sure if I'll actually finish at end the month (who knows), but I'm going to be concentrating on it, after I finish up with my one unfinished fill (it has 2 parts left). And, I will be going to visit family for a week in ten days or so. But, this will definitely give me something to work on during my time in the airport and on the plane and the boring moments when nothing is happening.

Questions: Alfred's adoptive parents are sort of based on a couple states, because of logistics with name changes and such, know you, having him become a Jones. And, his biological mother is a fem!America. Are you okay with the name Amelia? Also, are you okay with a genderbended France by the name Marianne Francis (haha >_>)? It's really funny, because I have an aunt Mary Francis.

Sorry for the late response A!A, I sorta forgot about this prompt while I was busy filling others myself :X I am glad to see that you are still working on it. I've never done NaNoWriMo, but I hope the writing process goes well :)

I'm perfectly fine with those names and gender bending (I actually really like fem!France so that works out well :D )

Caution for angst (in future updates) mixed with fluff mixed with extreme stream of consciousness from Arthur. Ye be warned.

Good Night, My Angel

1. Save These Questions for Another Day

“Daddy,” Alfred curled up into his nest of blankets. “Could you tell me a story?”

I settled myself into the plush cushioning of the armchair I had placed near his bed for just such occasions-part of our nightly ritual. He couldn’t ever seem to sleep without me telling him a story or singing him a song.

After all this time, it was almost as though they provided him some kind of reassurance that I was there and always would be there. Knowing that and looking into his sparking blue eyes-they could pull you in-I had to blink back the vague pressure of moisture building in my own eyes. I reached to his bedside table, nudged aside the two water glasses, and scooped up the book we had started the previous night. The Three Musketeers was an early Christmas present from the eccentric French lunatic and her wonderful children-I feel sorry for them every ( ... )

“That should have been an innocent enough gesture.” It was certainly an endearing one and I wished I had been there to witness my dear boy being the gentleman I’ve tried to raise him to be. “I must have a little talk with Ms Marianne Bonnefoy tomorrow.” I fought to unfurrow my brow, and patted Alfred on the back to sooth his sudden discomfort along with my own. “I won’t ask you what she told you. I can just imagine how she did so, too. I’m sorry, son ( ... )

I was trying to read this all day, but between being stuck at work and LJ being down, it was a struggle.

I'm glad I finally got to see this, because it is an awesome start. I love the idea that the story is going to be told out of order, it definitely adds a twisty, complex element to it (and this way no matter how angsty things get, we already know that Arthur and Alfred will be together in the end :D)

I eagerly await the next update. I can't wait to see how things work out :D

I'm glad OP and my reader-anons like it so far. The prologue will continue for a while longer, which means more angst. And, yes all this does mean that the characters will eventually see happier times.

The title of this section comes from a song, "Raindrops," sung by Dee Clark. It's rather old, but a really neat song and worth a listen.

I love the little snippets we're getting about Arthur's relationship with Marianne. It seems like she's just this mischief making figure of chaos, but you can tell by all the things in his life with her mark on it that they're closer than Arthur would admit.

Whatever happens, I hope Arthur stays away from the rum for Alfie. Poor things both of them. I can't wait for me. Thank you for updating again so quickly :)

Don't worry anon, I'm still with you although I wasn't expecting that bit of news. Poor Alfred will have a tough time handling that one. :(

Great update as always. I can't wait for the next part :)

Sorry about the sudden revelation, OP. Killing off a character I haven't even introduced is a shocker (even to me). It just felt like the right place for it. I'm relieved you're not upset with me. You will get to meet Arthur's wife. Just not yet. Him typing out those few short sentences was a big step. I promised a happy ending, and I will deliver, eventually. And...Arthur really is a good father; he'll tell him in a way that Alfred will understand. I hope this next bit of weird fluff makes up for the shock!
