It's my headcanon that America has always had a "dream big policy", so basically hearing about all the stuff he'll do in the future is sort of like a dream come true.
Benedict Arnold is an interesting historical figure, and I love to include random history in my fics whenever I can. Modern!US does mention his concern about maintaining the time-line because he likes getting it on with England history the way it is.
Well, past!America had to get something out of that journey.

That's really true about many great Americans' dreams, too, now that I think about it. (I can't think of a better word for "great" for the entrepreneurs, inventors, and social revolutionaries who have shaped our present for the better. That's pretty rare these days, it seems!)
Oh, Benedict Arnold. In a weird way, I feel sorry for him. He was so villainized and demonized by biographers that even now, many people's perception of him is that he was always a bad, treacherous man. Life is simply not that black-and-white, you know? He really was a turncoat, but he as far as I can tell he was loyal until he finally made his decision to switch sides. I guess it's just easier for us to believe that someone was always a traitor? Sometimes human being are childish like that, I guess.
Ahaha, trust America to be smart enough to worry about the timeline but have such selfish motives. (Then again, I admire him for being able to accept whatever regrets he has because he knows getting it on with England the present is worth it. <3)

I'm sure that a lot of people will be considered "great" twenty years from now. Everything is better in hindsight after all.
I think that if he'd received some of the recognition he deserved from Congress, he probably wouldn't have switched sides. Of course, his wife was a loyalist from a loyalist family and had been courted by John Andre shortly before she married Arnold, so who knows? I definitely think he's seen as more "evil" than he was.
America's probably had to accept that there's no such thing as a perfect world, so even if he could meddle with the past there's no point if he's happy with what he has. Also, if you mess with the past in fiction it tends to make the Nazis take over the world, so he could have reasons other than England.

Yeah, most of those people are easier to identify in hindsight, too. The people who create revolutionary new technology are obvious, but it's hard to tell which of the many people trying to engineer lasting social change in America and political change in the Middle East will win out. And it's almost impossible to tell which changes will actually be for the better at the moment
