At Word's End -- Part 6b

Alfred opened his mouth to argue and then shut it when he could think of absolutely no reason to get out of speaking to the King. He was sure he was going to get yelled at or maybe worse, though he didn't think his father would allow that sort of thing to happen under his roof. He shuddered slightly as he sat down shifting his pack off his shoulder and onto the ground next to the chair. The Northern King's eyes never left him and as Alfred settled in the chair the King raised his arm and the fire glowed with a brief intensity sending a wave of heat wafting over his chair before lowering to it's previous level. Alfred stared at it for a long moment and then turned slowly to face the King. The King regarded him in silence for a long moment, hand resting against his face legs casually crossed his eyes even more intensely purple in the firelight. Alfred tried not to fidget under the gaze

I feel so bad for Al... sexy Russian King or no, arranged marriges just suck all around. Poor kid even has to leave all his stuff behind! That has got to just suck... That's based off of some actual European marrige-between-royalty traditions, right? I can remember reading something about that in a book somewhere...
Really great job on this chapter! I simply can't wait for Al's next escape attempt and the impending ceremony!!!

Yeah arranged marriages are...hard to imagine for me I think very hard to deal with especially for someone for no time to prepare for it.
I haven't done a lot of research on European marriage-traditions but I admit to being more then a little influenced by the scene from the movie Marie Antoinette. My version of this little tradition is...going to be a little different though... ;-)

Update! Huzzah! (glomps author!anon, then shakes finger at them) Never apologize for putting stuff in a story if you had a reason for putting it there! And, considering the amount of work you've been putting into this fic, I'd say you probably had a reason! And you can't have a story that's all action and confrontations and high-tension - it doesn't work out plot-wise in the long run and would be exhausting to read. Quieter sections are vital because they give the reader a chance to breathe and absorb the info from the high-tension sections while still continuing the story. For example, after section 5, I wanted to bang Alfred over the head with a plank and tell him to get over himself, but now that he's explained his point of view and reasoning a bit better, I find myself liking him again. I'm still totally on Ivan's side, but Alfred is no longer being viewed as such a brat

Oh dear I'm rather alarmed that anyone would think Alfred was being bratty though I suppose I can see where that comes from...but I'm glad him getting a chance to talk about his feelings takes some of that away...
Oy...I hope I'm not raising people's expectations about the wedding too hard and then won't be able to live up to them... *nibbles fingernails*
LOL...well there's always a chance it might show up before June...we'll see which way the muses run.
Thanks again for your lovely detailed comments! I'm glad you're still enjoying the fic so much!

(grins) Actually, my opinion about Alfred's brattiness is totally hypocritical - it was mostly based around the fact that he was being so resistant towards Ivan, even though it's a completely in-character way for Alfred to behave. The main reason I wasn't supporting it was outsider info about Arthur and Ivan and the events that culminated in the marriage. If I was in his position, I'd probably behave in a similar manner. So, like I said, I may have felt like he was being a brat, but I also knew that I wasn't really justified in feeling that way

Ah yes...good...I'm glad to hear I didn't write him over the top with his attitude. I just hope people remember that he doesn't realize that behind-the-scenes stuff. He really thinks that there's not other reason for this marriage other then dowry/connection gains between the kingdoms and also despite the fact that it's taken be ages to post it it hasn't even been 24 hours yet since he arrived back home in Britannia. This is quickly turning into the Lost of fics
( ... )
What I meant by my comment about being an Anth minor (which I am) is that I love hearing about different cultures and customs. Which translates to 'make up as much as you want about this world, because I am eating it up with a spoon!' I don't know a huge amount about solstice ceremonies either, my areas of interest lay more in folklore and cryptozoology, but I have heard a thing or two - mostly, like you, from history programs but also from a couple of projects I've done for school that touched on the subject area a bit
( ... )
That's why I gave myself an easy out with place names and basic culture though the more I progress the more different I discover the world my characters live in is from the "real world" but not having to name countries and cities frees myself up to play around with the magic and the traditions and the inter-kingdom connections. And since it's a Hetalia AU gives people something known to hook into. And I'm just lazy and don't want to think up town names for places that only appear like once. Placement wise things are sort of close to how they are in Europe but not really. Eventually I'll get my scanner hooked up and will get my map scanned (not that it's that great)
I love chatting about it too. I have people I chat with about fic but neither of them are reading this one so yeah...it's helfpul.
Ah yes I remember that and looking back I wasn't a very helpful person...I apologize...orz. I'd love to give your fic a try I haven't read much Germania I admit.
I'm being helpful? Yays! ^^ Even if the map isn't that great, I'm still looking forward to seeing it at some point (as I am absolutely horrible at visualizing locations in relation to one another in my head). And don't worry about not being a helpful person when I was originally looking for the rest of the fic - I didn't really give much reason for you to be helpful, and it inspired me to go searching and to use my logicing skills! And I did end up finding it!
I didn't actually include Germania in my fic - it involves France, England, Prussia, Germany, and a bit of N. Italy right at the end. Here's the link to the request and my fill (you'll have to scroll down to get to it): http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/13125.html?thread=30449477#t30449477

Yay! You updated!.
I felt so sorry for Alfred these last chapters, because having people do things behind his back "for his own good" is most likely something he hates, despite good intentions.
I was wondering. Do the people in this have longer lives or are they regular humans with magic? I think you said that Matt was almost 30, so Al would be too. But I picture Arther looking about 30 even though logiclly he would be in his 50's? And then Ivan sounds late 30's although I keep thinking he's in his late 40's, and I just go that's a big age gap! So if it is at all possible, if you could clairfy the species and ages? If you can't that's perfectlly fine.
This is a bit off topic, but the day I first read your fic I had just finished watching a Eureka 7 marathon and that night I got a mental image of Alfred in Eureka's situation in the last episode. Al was in a huge pulsing orb and he had wings and a glowy gem thing on his forehead, because he was being a hero and sacrificed himself to hold the world together or something. And I

Thank you I'm glad that you're enjoying it!
I haven't addressed the age thing because I haven't fully decided on it yet. It is my canon that magic does make them longer lived how much longer I haven't fully decided on yet but long enough that Matthew being in an arranged marriage with Ivan would be a long time. They do look considerably younger then their real ages though. The twins are in their early 20's. (could you point out where I said that Matt was almost 30 I need to change that...)
I'd love fan art...not sure if I'll ever write anything fan art worthy though... *ponders*

Don't worry anon! I checked and you said "not even thirty" so you don't need to change anything.
I'm not promising anything, but I'd most likely draw a profile of them in their clothing. (Al in a kimono?) I can't do scenes. I'll also have to link it to my deviantart page. But we'll see.
