Sign of Distress: Upisde Down American Flag anonymous March 25 2010, 17:19:27 UTC
The US Flag Code States:
"The flag should never be displayed with the canton down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

This is mostly a maritime thing I believe and is actually true of the flags of all countries but I think it's most well known for the US Flag.

I would like a fill dealing with this and a time America needed to do it. I'm hoping for something with a darker more angsty lean but silliness, fluff or crack is fine too. H/C is a definite plus. Smut is fine if you want to add it but it's not necessary. (Any time period is fine to set it in, AU is okay too)

Pairings: I would adore some Russia/America/England, I crave my OT3 at all times. But normal Russia/America or UKUS is fine instead. Or if that doesn't floats your boat I'm also fine with China/America, Poland/America, Germany/America or Spain/America.

Ahh...I might do this, but I don't know if I can handle the angst right now. If I do anything, it will likely be silliness.

I don't think it's true of all flags -- I mean, how could it be? Many, many flags are horizontally symmetrical. If you flip a Japanese flag upside-down, it still only looks like a Japanese flag. If you flip an Indonesian flag upside-down, it looks like a Polish flag!

Yeah I'm aware. I just worded it the way the source I used worded it. I figured if I changed it to only include some nation's without knowing exactly which ones used it that way and which ones didn't, or just left it that it was a US thing without clarifying it might work that way for other nations, that someone might get offended and nitpick about it...

So I figured it would just be safest to just blanket everyone in...

I know of one other country... anonymous March 29 2010, 06:33:35 UTC
The Philippines, if I recall correctly. The right side up is blue on top, signifying peace...so having it upside down (with the red on top) would signal distress.
On a slightly related note, my sister had to draw the flag back when she was in 1st or 2nd grade. She coloured the top in red and got told off by her teacher xD

Philippines flag etiquette anonymous March 29 2010, 06:41:23 UTC
The only time CAT training has come in useful!

The Philippines, like in many other ways, did get its flag code from their slavish adoration big brother the United States. In fact, the colors - red, white, and blue mainly - were chosen to pay homage to the colors of the United States, as a letter from the first president of the Philippines stated. Later, during WWII when it was flown again, the colors shifted slightly to specifically American Navy Blue and the red of the American stripes, because those were the colors most easily obtained from cloth stores.

Flag is flown upside down for distress and also (I think this is unique to the Philippines?) upside down in times of war. Blue for peace, red for war.

Finally, we were taught in Civilian Army Training that we need to fold the flag properly, thirteen folds I think, if putting it away, and we got that from the 'Canos as well.

Hello, fellow Fil!anon anonymous October 2 2011, 09:06:11 UTC
It sure is strange, isn't it? To have most of our military rules & etiquette predominated by a nation that barely ruled over us for two-three years or so more than the country who colonized us for more than three centuries.

Ah, history. How you astound me.
