A sort of Charles Darnay, Sydney Carton relationship. Alfred is in an impossible situation (a falsified murder or treason charge) and Matthew takes his place, knowing that Alfred will do far greater things if he lives, and giving value that he feels he was lacking in his own life.

Bonus: Takes place during the Revolutionary War.

Anon, Sydney Carton is like one of my favorite characters from any fandom ever! I love him so much that I want to be just like him if I'm ever in a situation like that. Because I want my beloved to be happy even if it's not with me, you know?

So seconding, on the assumption that Tale of Two Cities stuff gets incorporated into the story. Or even just Charles Dickens stuff. I love literary allusions, can't you tell?
