Prompt, from part seven.
"General Winter is Canada's father."

Anon would very much like to apologize for forgetting about the fill promise, I found the prompt against yesterday was like oh hell. BTW, stole your title.

Matthew scrambled to remember the past sometimes, but it went through his hands like sand. His mind playing over the bitter few memories he did have of then. They were just smells, and feelings. The vague knowledge of a person, with no memory of their face or name. The warmth of fire, the dances, the whispered prayers as he drew a bow and promised the world he would be grateful and use all he was given, furs, fat, sinew, bones. Asking for help as he let go ( ... )

The winter was warm, and short. Just like they gave the land names, they gave the people names, skrælingar. They held their weapons with nervousness as Matthew and the others and all the people he could find came out from the trees with curious eyes and things to trade. They put their bags down, opening them up to show the pelts and furs. At first weapons were pushed forward, something that made nervousness bubble in Matthew's stomach, but next someone offered milk. He smiled. He wanted the milk and nothing else ( ... )

But every time Matthew tried to wander off to find the sun-man he'd get grabbed by the scuff of his parka and pulled close again. And they kept walking into the black night, farther and farther west, farther north. Constantly running away from the inevitable truth ( ... )

"Come here." There was no fatherly love in that voice, Matthew must have hesitated because in an instant he was being tugged on his knees and pushed towards the ice. He glanced back, mouth open with a silent question and father just scowled, pointing at the ice. Matthew stuck out his tongue, turned around and saw ( ... )

Once they were in a few days of home Matt finally spoke, which did little to warm Winter's heart, "Did you tell them the same things ( ... )

Holy SHIT, anon. This is the most beautiful thing I've read in this fandom in a very long time. God. There are so many things I want to say here, and so many subtle bits you wove into this I want to touch on, but I just can't make my thoughts coherent.

I love the whole thing, and I love the end, and I have visions tumbling through my head of modern, grown-up Canada coming face to face with General Winter again. This one is going to stay with me a while.

I wasn't sure if I should respond since it would take up space but becuase the post is closing~

@ grabby hands anon.
As if! You like, totally don't. Your not nearly as like, like-y right?
*Hugs.* Nah, you are wonderful. Seriously, put a smile on my face seeing your response right after I posted. And made me check for everyone else's. Their breasts do not belong to you Korea. Iroquois Confederacy alone was like six nations, so I assume baby Matt had a heck of alot of siblings, even if most must have lived very far off / been Alfred's siblings too. But I'm happy it didn't come off as insulting not really touching on them. I didn't want to do the research to go more in depth. ^^'

@ only anon who didn't swear.Your making me blush. Last paragraph, and the last of part two were basically written in at the last minute to attempt to tie up everything, so I'm glad it didn't come off as jarring. You get a hug too, *Squeezes.* For making me extremely happy, I was worried the metaphors broke up the flow and slowed down the piece, I'm glad ( ... )
