Absaroka was a proposed state, made up of parts of Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming, that contemplated secession and forming its own state in 1939. America is so thin and weak because this is set during the Great Depression, which had begun ten years before in 1929 and continued until World War II.

The incident Canada remembers is the State of Franklin, which existed for 4 years between 1784 and 1790 before being absorbed into Tennessee.

Oh, this was so gorgeous! I was so happy about the fill I was torn between squeeing in and sniffling because of how bad I felt for America. I attributed his being skinny to the Depression right away, and I love that you added that in. I love the part about Canada fidgeting with his hat, then dropping it, and just holding America. The two of them are so good with each other! God... I love how you put so much into a short piece - the bit about the state of Franklin and England, and how Arizona and New Mexico were there too, and how they were swept up into the hug in the end. Thank you so much!
