Soldier Boy - part 4 anonymous July 31 2009, 00:16:37 UTC
The fourth step was taken during movie night, a long-established tradition. Hell, even before there were movies, they'd had a habit - if not as steadily scheduled - of getting together to watch plays or concerts, or even read books together - that is, read them aloud. (Matthew and Alfred shared a secret joy in using European accents, deliberately inaccurately silly, to deliver the narration. Matthew's French accent never failed to bring Alfred to tears; whereas Alfred's ability to mock Arthur's tongue in a different dialect every time always impressed Matthew). But movie night had become something as regular as clockwork after World War II, when England and America had established that 'special relationship' (and oh, hadn't he been quietly but hopelessly jealous) and it had been less difficult for England's Commonwealth to hang out with America. Australia and America had become good buddies, in particular, but of course the one who'd ended up spending the most time with America - more, even, than England - was his own neighbor-across- ( ... )

"If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human, fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit. Because I am hard you will not like me. But the more you hate me the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?" Canada laughed at having remembered the whole speech, but realized America wasn't laughing. He looked at his brother-lover-ally's enrapt eyes, felt the way America was rutting himself frantically, needily - no longer playful - against Canada's thigh, and came to a realization ( ... )

Matthew, recalling Arthur's frequent and loud complaints about his brother's slouching and messiness during conferences - and Francis's about America's leather-jacketed lack of fashion - had a fleeting thought: if only he could convince everyone to attend meetings in military uniform like they had during WWII - better yet, in military dress uniform - Alfred would never slouch, afraid to shame his uniform; and he'd punch Francis himself if the man dared imply Alfred looked anything less than stunning in those dress blues. (But perhaps he was a little biased, now ( ... )

Finally, Matthew offered up the Mameluke sword used by Marine officers, sheathed in stainless steel with gold accents. Alfred stood very still as Matthew buckled his sword on.

And then Matthew stepped back and admired the picture Alfred presented.

Oh, this was going to be fun.
