November Special Recs: five recs, Longmire, plus mini-manifesto
My view of Longmire is informed by both the series and the books. I watched the series first, then started reading the books, and each enhances my appreciation of the other. I picture the series cast when reading. I love the relationships on the show and in the book series, and am definitely rooting for the Vic/Walt romance for the long haul.
Mini-manifesto
What do I like about this ship?
They've got mutual respect coming out the gate. Though Walt is the sheriff and as such is Vic's superior, he values her experience as a former Philly police officer and she treats him more as an equal than anybody else does. He sees her as a potential replacement for him when he's ready to retire. This isn't as evident on the show as it is in the books, but the subtext is still there. Walt doesn't condescend to Vic, even while he's teaching her techniques more useful in a rural environment than in the urban/suburban atmosphere of Philly.
They're complicated. They like each other as people. They also like each other romantically, but both are almost completely in denial about it for much of the first two seasons, despite references other people make to their relationship. Basically, everybody sees it but them. Walt still labels himself in love with his dead wife, and Vic is married, to a man who doesn't get her at all, in my opinion. Walt does still love Martha, but they were married for a long time and they had a child together. He's never going to not love her. And Vic does love her husband, though I don't see much respect between them on either side.
Vic and Walt are professionals. They work well together. They put aside whatever they might be feeling toward each other when they're on the job. Vic compartmentalizes a bit less efficiently than Walt does, but he has more experience with it, I'd imagine, as the longtime sheriff in a more-rural-than-not county where he knows just about every damn body.
It's a mature, second-chance, friends-to-lovers romance, which hits more than a few of my romance trope kinks. And it doesn't hurt that Katee Sackhoff and Robert Taylor have great chemistry.
And obviously, I have a thing for first times. lol
