Okay, I am so relieved to read multiple people at this point saying they've teared up during the opening scene. I thought I was losing it! (I saw it with guys.)

It was the damn music. Stupid pretty-sad violins accompanying the shots of exploding space ships and the back and forth between the poor doomed George and Mrs. Kirk and wee Jim, and George bravely joking about his father's name seconds before death and... WAAHHH. I have vastly mixed feelings about JJ Abrams, but the dude really knows how to squeeze out emotional response from his audience. I didn't outright cry, but there might have been a little bit of sniffling -- I won't lie.
