Heh, I can see that, having missed most of the back-and-forth of the Clark/Lana saga, I'm not feeling quite the same frustration about whether the last ten minutes of the ep signals progression or regression.
Re: your first point: ah, gotcha. Clark's got a huge blind spot where Lana's concerned. I wonder, has he ever in the history of the show argued with her? Spoken sharply to her? Exhibited disappointment in her? Because I can see him occasionally acknowledging via his responses to her (not so much consciously) that she has faults and qualities which make them incompatible, but still loving (and idealizing) her anyway.
