Sure enough, the door opens as if they're entering the front foyer of Clark's house. He glances around the entrance way and then stops to listen ( Read more... )

"Conference?" asks Eights, curiously. In the year and change of their acquaintance she's never bothered to ask what Clark's mother does for a living.

The listening catches her eye, and she's about to speak as she walks through the door...

...but then she walks through the door, and that bothersome rule about taking dead objects to a live world catches up with her.

"Um." She looks down at herself ruefully. "Can I borrow a shirt or something?"

"What?" Clark turns around to find out what she's talking about and then... turns right back again.

"Uh. Yeah. Stay here." With that, he jogs upstairs and returns a few minutes later with a large plaid shirt and some smaller sized jeans. Somehow, he manages to pas them to her without actually looking at her.

"Shirt's mine; jeans are my mom's. They should fit, for now."

"Thanks," she says, with a grin he probably can't see, and dresses herself hastily. "Yeah, I tend to forget that particular part of going on vacation until it hits me."

There's something unduly adorable about the way she's drowning in all that plaid, smiling apologetically.

"It's all right. No harm done," he smiles back, finally facing her now that she's dressed.

"I should probably give you a quick tour before I abandon you for a shower." He starts off toward the kitchen, expecting she'll follow.

"Well, this is the kitchen, obviously. Dining room, sitting room," Clark points them all out in turn, waiting for Eights to take some time to look around, if she wants.

After reading a book or two, Eights has the bright idea of climbing to the roof of the barn to get a good look at her very first sunrise in a living world since she died.

Getting up there isn't difficult, and the sunrise is every bit as entrancing as she thought it would be. But Anna's grace and Eight-Hour's cavalier fearlessness don't overturn the law of gravity, and descending from the roof of a barn without a ladder is... well.

How do living people do this?

Clark has had a great night's sleep. In fact, he's almost convinced when he wakes up that everything has just been a very long, very odd dream. He takes his time showering and changing and by the time he bounds down the stairs to put some coffee on, he is convinced a dream is all it was.

"Hey, Shelby," he greets the dog, scooping out some food for him, and then peers out the window to the yard, trying to decide what the weather's going to be like.

At some point during the night Eights raided her shopping bags and got dressed. Plain blue jeans and a nondescript white T-shirt, and a bra, thank fuck.

So the clothes she had been wearing earlier have been deposited in the first laundry bin she could find, and there's an empty shopping bag from Fordman's on the arm of the couch.

Oh, and her band-aid is discarded by the kitchen sink, folded into a small square. She meant to throw it out, she really did. She just got... distracted.

Anna herself is nowhere to be seen. Being on the roof of the barn will do that. She hasn't quite got up the courage to shout for help; she's still arguing with herself over whether jumping down would really truly break the spirit of the vacation. (It would.)

The bandaid causes him to frown, but he brushes the feeling off and deposits it in the garbage before he can give it a second thought.

It isn't until he wanders into the sitting room that things really start to sink in. He hasn't been to Fordman's in ages. Neither has his mother.

"Crap."

Back at the window, he pays a little more attention to the barn. He doesn't quite think to look up. Yet.

Casino Royale was highly entertaining. Eights couldn't help but laugh at the torture scene. As promised, after the movie they proceed towards the Daily Planet building.

She'd be offering conversation, but she's too busy scheming on how to climb that globe. Somewhat guiltily; she knows Clark wouldn't approve.

Clark really wouldn't. He's been up on that roof - he's jumped from it - he knows how high it is without going to the top of the globe.

He also enjoyed the movie and the fact that he had someone to go with to see it who would also like it, and who wasn't Lois.

As they approach a coffee shop, he stops just past the door. "I'm going to grab something, do you want anything while I'm in?"

"Nah, I'm good," replies Anna automatically. A moment later she smiles, as for once it is actually true and not mere politesse.

Clark disappears into the cafe for just a few minutes and returns with two cups and a small bag.

Once they're back on their way, he gives Anna a small smile. "Thanks for suggesting that. The movie. I liked it and who knows when I actually would have gone on my own."
