Clark doesn't help all that much with the food. Cutting bread doesn't really count and frankly, Anna not only seems to have things under control, she likes it that way, so he figures staying out of her hair is the best option ( Read more... )

"Anytime," Chloe smiles and then ushers Jimmy toward the elevator and inside.

Once they're gone, Clark sighs loudly and goes back into the kitchen. It might sound like he's throwing the dishes around, but he's not. He's just close to it.

"Fine," his tone has the edge back to it and he drops her hand. Then he turns to the sink and starts rinsing the towel under cold water.

"...Um?" she asks, lost. "Is there something wrong with that?"

He shrugs, focussed on wringing out the towel. "No, but it's not like it really matters, right? If it was an inconvenience, you'd just fix it."

"...Okay, I have no idea what's going on, but apparently I've pissed you off. Can you tell me how, so I can try not to do it again?"

Yes, this would be Anna's 'confused and mildly perturbed' voice.

"I'm not pissed off," he snaps and then sighs. "I'm just tired. It's been a long day."

Anna grins wryly. "I can tell," she says, and it's both an ironic comment on his first statement and a sympathetic comment on his second one.

And then, rather tentatively, she gives him a hug.

"Sorry." She throws the word out like a net, attempting to catch thereby every bad thing that's ever happened to Clark, and offer an apology for each.

It takes a moment, but he does hug her back, though it's loose and stiff and rather brief.

"It's fine. Don't worry about it."

"I reserve the right to worry about you so long as you're still worrying about me," she says dryly. "Fair's fair, after all."

She's going to completely ignore the fact that he's hugging her with about as much enthusiasm as he would a cactus. Yep. Uh-huh.

Oh look, dishes. To be cleaned. Imagine that. What an excellent distraction from cactus hugs.

"All right." It sounds suspiciously like agreement.

Also, dishes are an awesome idea. Really, they are.

Dishes!

Dishes, dishes, dishes...

...well, crap. The dishes are done. Now what?

Clark seems at a loss. Everything's spotless and if Oliver were to walk in right now he'd never know they'd just had a dinner party in his apartment.

Which is what they'd just done, wasn't it. They had a dinner party. With guests.

Clark is going to just go flop on the couch again and try and figure out how the hell he ended up here to begin with.

Anna's going to go to the couch, too. And perch. On the back. At a reasonable distance from Clark - not close enough to be crowding, not far enough to be avoiding. It's a calculation she's had to make many times, and she's gotten quite good at it.

"I should probably be getting home. I have work to do."

He doesn't appear to be moving, however.

"You'll come talk to me again? Continue that conversation we postponed?"

Clark nods. "Yeah, we uh, need to figure some things out."
