Have always wanted to read The Shining, but never got the nerve even though I'm not exactly a virgin to Stephen King's work. Good point with the apple, after all it was the primary object of forbidden temptation in one of the most historically dominating religions, even thought the fruit was never really specified. Flashback to the story of a si jeh in spcs who took to the routine of munching on an apple during morning physics class with 爺爺. But I disagree with the point about subversion being dependent on vengeance or grudge. Not vengeance, but an inherent disconnect with the system (at risk of sounding too trite here) - having 'a splinter in your mind, driving you mad', discontent with the status quo.

"And what if love takes him away from us?" Maybe you need to find someone with whom you can be Jack Torrances - you will be his and he will be yours.

where is the difference? between the two? isn't discontent with the status quo a form of jealousy, a grudge of some sort
