For the whole day there was no sun; there were no mid-day shadows, everything was soft, in a yellow-tinged blur. Standing on the twelfth floor of my office looking out, it was as if I was surrounded by a sea of beige, the dotted houses below slowly decreasing in opacity to become a ghostly field of lung poison.
