Meme Roth infuriates me. As the daughter of someone who had parental-fueled food issues, her beliefs on "moderation" needs moderation of a different kind. My grandmother's hypervigilant policing of my father's eating habits really helped him to develop negative food issues later in life. I'm sorry she's ashamed of her obese family, but taking her anger out on her kids is just not fair to them. Her ideas are not new, but her hysteria does her cause no favors. Instead of teaching her children to enjoy but not overindulge, she causes junk food to be twice as attractive - not only is it tasty, but it's also an act of defiance. The teenage years in that house ought to be interesting. And I hope none of her children develop any eating disorders (there was an interesting interview with her in BUST this month, a sidebar to a piece on Fat Acceptance.)
I love your comment on Obama's community organizer viewpoint.
And I'm very interested to hear what you learned about Google Reader, my new obsession. :)
Ooh, I'd be interested to read that. (I probably should just get a subscription to BUST.)
The community organizer comment is all Matthew Iglesias. I am totes not that smart :)
re: Google Reader ... I am kind of ashamed to admit my techno-fail. I literally hadn't figured out how to view All New Items as an integrated feed rather than having to view each feed individually. (Relatedly, I am still figuring out this tags/folders thing. I know how to tag individual posts, but then I go to Manage Subscriptions and I only just today noticed the "Add to a folder" button over on the right when you're in "Subscriptions" -- foolishly I had been going to "Folders and Tags" to try to create folders. I really like the idea of feedreaders, but so much of GoogleReader feels clunky to me and like it doesn't do [enough] what I want it to.)
Actually, the blurb in BUST references this article in The Guardian that shows how messed up this woman is. She's honestly kind of deranged.
You TOTES ARE that smart. Which is why I thought it was you, obviously. ;)
I'm also having trouble with tags and folders. I've been only able to save things by "starring" them, which presents its own pluses and minuses. I like it for certain things, but I agree, the interface is clunky and takes way longer than it should to load.
[having nothing to do with your post, just the subject line]
Seriously, I went around the internet yesterday researching it because I could not figure out what the hell this holiday was that closed down Boston libraries but apparently does not exist out of state.
I saw the "twirl" icon when I opened this notification and was momentarily confused and then remembered that I'd stolen your away message for my Subject Line.

See, here I thought you were being all clever in your away message and referencing the current debate about whether to eliminate the Bunker Hill holiday.
