So today, my mom and I went to the movies and saw The Fighter (Christian Bale = MIND BLOWN---must post more about that later). Later JoJo and I plowed through more of Series 11 of Top Gear (James and Richard on Japanese trains = adorkable). Then I watched Wedding Crashers (stupid but entertaining). God, I need to write something.

You know, I never really connected Rose losing Earth to Nine losing Gallifrey before. I guess because she didn't really lose it, and it's not really her Earth- it's the one from billions of years in the future. But still, I think you're right that it's something she had to experience in order to understand the Doctor.

I saw the metaphor when I first watched the episode---I don't know how to turn my "English major mode" off.

Yes, I think it was more of a simulation of what he lost, but he needs her to know the gravity of what she's getting into, which is still very real for him. I also don't think they would have grown as close if she hadn't experienced that.

Confessions of a former Who!n00b: when I first started watching, I was so ignorant of DW's canon that I thought the Doctor was the last of the Time Lords from the very beginning of the series, like back in One's day. I had no idea the Time War was a recent occurrence (inasmuch as a word like "recent" has any meaning here). I'm not sure how that may have affected my first impression of Nine, not knowing his PTSD was fresh.

LOL. The Whoniverse is so expansive that when we all first get into it, our imaginations run a little wild.
More Who!n00b confessions: when I first discovered the show, I had heard that Captain Jack Harkness was immortal, and I saw an icon of him hugging Nine (in "Bad Wolf," I think), so at first I assumed he was a Time Lord. Then I started watching Torchwood and assume that he and the Doctor were really old friends, like stretching back to the Classic!Who Expanded Universe or something, but not seen onscreen. So when I got to "The Empty Child" and found that Jack and the Doctor didn't know each other at that point, I was really confused.
