Complaining About Complaining (or "Hooray For Hypocrisy!")

Mar 18, 2009 11:06

Okay, I'm in this class called "The History of Women in Pop Culture," and I really, really like the teacher and the subject matter (we've talked about the history of flappers, women in film before the Hays Code of 1930, and women working in bomber factories during WWII, and now we're discussing Wonder Woman; eventually we'll get to magic as a ( Read more... )

I am the first one to call those kinds of people out once the teacher has entered the room. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, very true, however the fact that they can't say this in front of the teacher makes them not only obnoxious, paper-pushers-to-be hypocrites, but cowards too.

They are cowards. I've never thought of it that way before. If you don't like something, you should be able to say so to the teacher. I really want to call them out, but being outnumbered makes it hard, and I've had a lot of experience with bullies who immediately twisted their words as soon as I told a teacher.

Yeah but you don't have to use any words at all. Be smarter then they are, that's all!

For instance saying things like: well, that's not what you say when she's not in the room.

And leave it at that! Cowards have a conscience... and it will affect then, naturally. ;)

Also, if you do respond in such a manner, in front of the teacher, you can probably assume they won't gripe too much in front of you anymore, since you are strong enough to stand up and say they are cowards. Even if you say it vicariously. ;)

I hate people like that. People who complain, in general. Not that I'm above it or anything but I can recognize how annoying it is, and especially when it comes to classes. Like the people who get snippy about professors expecting you to be there on time or not have your cell phone on. It's common courtesy, people!

And of course there's the fact that even in college people manage to be so closed-minded about anything different, from teaching styles to source materials. It amazes me that at this age, in this country, people can be so ignorant and willfully so. But you know, I guess it shouldn't.

these are freshmen business majors who will become paper-pushing drones who won't actually contribute to society in a meaningful way.

But see here's the thing, no they're not! Those are the idiots that end up at Wall Street! Screwing people over! Stealing money from Eli Wiesel! They will contribute to society, negatively! Booo, business majors!

*cough* Rant over, sorry.

WORD. To all of it. I kind of want to smack them, but I would never actually do that.

And the thing is, there are three of them (two athletic girls and one gay boy who loves Doris Day and Golden Girls) and sometimes a fourth girl joins in, and sometimes the sorority girls do, too, and there's only one of me because the quiet people wouldn't ever stand up to them. So every time I try to dissent, they have more people saying, "No, it's like this..." and I just want to *headdesk*.

I don't even get why they're in the class when they're just going to whine and gripe about it at the first chance they get. They don't even try to get anything out of it. I mean, I know I've learned quite a bit because I had no clue films were so liberal until 1933, when this nutball named Joseph Breen enforced the Hays Code with a frightening fervor, and that's just one example. But I want to learn this stuff because I love this subject, where I just think these people just want three hours---they're all about credit hours and stuff like that. What ( ... )

I try to imagine that I'm smacking them with my dry wit, but it's not nearly as satisfying.

Aww, don't knock the Golden Girls! The Golden Girls are awesome! But I know the feeling. The worst feeling, though, is when (it feels like) I'm the only person in class who does the reading or is willing to voice an opinion. I feel like I'm monopolizing the class and that's never good. And I think, you know, these are 300 and 400 level classes! You should be here because you want to be here, and at this point, you should know what the hell you're talking about ( ... )

They'd just stare at me with those "What the hell is wrong with you?" stares they all probably perfected in high school.

I've never seen Golden Girls, and I wasn't really trying to knock it; I was just saying, "Hey, if you get to have a show that's not quite in the mainstream, then I do, too." It's a 1000 level class (at my university we do 1000, 2000, etc. instead of 100, 200, etc.), but the other two 1000 level elective classes (counterculture and historical films) I took had people who were interested in the subject matter, so I don't get why there's suddenly a massive difference. And this is in the school's Honors College, so you'd think all of the people would be interested in learning, but apparently, some people just want something that will look good on a resume ( ... )
